1st samurai questions
« on: November 27, 2008, 11:05:57 PM »
Picked up my Samurai tonight, only paid $1000 for it, not sure if that was too much.   Tin top JX model, has new 33x12.50 mud terrains on it, not sure exactly what kind of lift or how much but at least part if not all is shackles, has lockers front and rear, motor was rebuilt "recently," new bearings & seals in the rear, has been "geared down."  I've been big into dirtbikes up until know so kinda new to this seen.  I think I'm going to go try it out this weekend anything I should check over before I go?  Anyone in UT want to go up A.F. canyon or elsewhere close by saturday?

I'll try and get some pics up soon.  The front diff is welded & the rear has a locker in it. What is the difference? Sorry if its a dumb question.

A locker allows the tires to turn at different speeds as you turn a corner.  If the diff is welded the tires are turning at the same speed no matter what.

One of the most common problems with Samurais is the shifter sheet in the transfer case.  If it is the original part, it is probably worn out.  Do a search for shifter sheet here for more information.  A very reliable replacement brass shifter sheet is available for less than $25.00 from Zuks Offroad (http://www.zuksoffroad.net/).  If you can't wait for the sheet, be sure to carry a couple of long handled flat-bladed screwdrivers with you on the trail.  Take a look at this webpage to learn what you need to do if the t-case does "lock up" before you go: http://forum.difflock.com/viewtopic.php?t=2285&highlight=.  You can find this and other helpful links at Ack's FAQ (see link in my signature).

If your Samurai is a "Daily Driver", you'll probably notice some bad (but very fixable!) steering/handling habits if the PO was not careful when modding the suspension.  There is lots of information on "bump steer", "death shakes" and more at zukiworld.com and other great Zukin' websites!
