It's not the hinges you need to worry about, it's the metal of the
door that gets weak and breaks, support the tire so it doesn't
flex the sheet metal and it will live  ;)

I had a 31" with aluminum rim on mine I made it fit tight and made sure no bounce it was nice, but when I went to 33s I threw the spare inside.

Was that on a 2 door soft top?
yes a two dr had to modify carrier a bit so bottom stuck out and tire didnt hit the bumper but it looked great

I had a 31" Swamper mounted on a modified stock mount for a couple of years. The mount held up fine, but the hinges really took a beating and began to clunk a lot, and then I began to notice small cracks in the sheet metal near the door opening. Finally built a swing away mount, problems solved. BTW, I still have the modified mount, will fit up to a 32" wheel / tire combo if anyone needs one. Photo at my flickr site.

Jerry,
I ran the 33x12.50's on mine for years with no issues. The 15X10 rims with 4"BS fit perfect on the mount (no rear bumper). I would drop my pressure on the tire down, tighten the lug nuts then air the tire up to full pressure. It would snug the tire tight on the door, no wobbling, moving around etc..
If you care about your paint.... you probably dont want to do this, but it's  only paint  ;)

I have a 34x10.50 on my door with a carrier I built.  It essentially moves the tire up 3" and out 1.5".   If your handy with a welder, it's a pretty easy thing to make.   Here's the tire on the back...I'll look around to see if I have any pics of the bracket itself.  If not, I can snap off a few.
