front driveshaft bolts came loose
« on: May 22, 2009, 12:17:29 AM »
I playing around on on a loading dock like immature kid i am, and i notices the front drive shaft bolts were loose, well the one that was there was anyway.
So other than just old age and rust, what else could have caused that?
I have a d-shaft spacer, but its the other end, by the t-case. The case hasn't been sounding too good for a while, needs a rebuild i think. maybe that?
I just don't want to think just tightening it up will fix it then have it blow up on the trail.

The bolts may not have been torqued up properly. Under tightening is an obvious problem but overtightening can also be a problem, the bolts can be stretched and weakened. The other issue is that the spring washers may have been worn out/crushed.

I had that problem continually with my sami...figured it just must be driveshaft angles causing some vibration.  I found that a set of nylock nuts and lockwashers never came loose again...cheap fix

I have had mine come loose a few times, you just need to check them every once in a while.

Or go with sewerzuk's idea and fix it permanently.  But what is the fun in that.  :D  I would recommend picking up a set of drive-line bolts to keep in your tool bag.  Sammy's use the same bolts on all 4 corners, so one set will save you if you loose them.

Blue is made to be removable.  Red is made to be pretty much permanent, so it sets up harder.

Different bond strengths - the most common are blue & red - loctite blue is medium strength, loctite red is high strength.  Loctite red may require heat to break the bond, blue typically does not.

You can also match it to the fastner size - put loctite red on a small fastner and the bond strength could be greater than the stregth of the fastner itself, which will result in the fastner shearing if you try to undo it.

What I'd like to know is why does loctite blue come in a red bottle ?

I've wondered that too.....blue comes in a red container and red comes in a blue container. ???
