New Zuki owner question for the wise.

I have a 95 Zuki JX.  It has AT that is very weak in reverse, but strong in all other gears.  It does not slip in R but is just weak.  Guy suggested it is low pressure to the tranny.  Is this controlled by the ECM?  I am brand new to these rides, so be gentle and specific.  Thanks.

Anybody?  I would like to know if I should be keeping an eye out for a replacement tranny or if the problem could be sensor/ecm related.  Thanks  ???

try a trans filter first    i had to do 1 in a nissin pickup i had it didnt want to back up new filter fixed it

I am pretty sure the filter is in good shape as I trust the former owner addressed it.  He worked at a Firestone service center with access to scanners, diagnostics, as well as other garages and said in reverse, the transmission was not getting enough pressure and it was a pressure sensor issue.  I thought it may be a separate part from the ECU/ECM, but now I am not sure.

I don't trust most shops. Especially when it comes to "rare" or more obscure vehicles like ours. I don't believe it will be much work or $$$ to change out the filter, and warrants investigation. 4 speed is computer controlled, and 3 speed isn't. Unfortunately I know very little about auto transmissions. There may be other web sites that are more A/T oriented that could be helpful?

Try a search for automatic at Ack's FAQ (the link is in my signature, below).

There is a pdf document that is part of the '96 Tracker FSM describing three-speed and four-speed automatic transmission maintenence.  Links to more detailed information found in the '96 Tracker FSM may appear in the coming weeks.

The 3-speed AT is a pretty much manually controlled unit.  The 4-speed OD transmission has it's own ECM and is a bit more of a challenge to work on without the FSM (that section will be available at the FAQ eventually after I finish the bathroom remodel  ;D ).

Finally, you mentioned that you have a '95 Zuki JX with an AT.  Not to be mean or anything but this description is not very helpful.  A "Zuki JX" could be a Samurai with an engine/transmission swap or a Sidekick.  If it is a 4-door Sidekick, it has the 4-speed AT. If it is a 2-door Sidekick, it has the 3-speed AT.  Knowing specific information like the exact make and model of your truck makes it easier for us responders to give you accurate information.

Yes, sorry, it is a 4 door, with OD so that would be a 4 speed is what your saying, and it is controlled (pressure to the transmission) by the ECM?  Recently, the problem diminishes randomly and seems to have full power in reverse.  Maybe I should take some compressed air and blow out the ECM?

There are so many small oil passagways in an AT, maybe one was slightly clogged with some dirt...
Now that it seems to be working, maybe the filter should be changed just to be safe.
