Whats the easiest way to get gear oil out of carpet?

I jumped in the Kick the other day and smelled gear lube. I assumed I had developed a leak and checked under the ride... no leaks to be found. After two more days of riding in my kick I spotted a full (or use to be) bottle of gear lube under the seat. Any ideas on the easiest/best way to get a quart of gear lube out of my carpet? I have a portable carpet cleaner but I think that would ruin the steamer.

I've heard that Simple Green works pretty well.  But you might have to pull the carpet and clean the metal off as well, if it soaked through.

Im thinking it's gonna need to be a carpet removal. Great idea on the somple green. Does any one know if it will hurt the carpet to be there for 1-2 weeks? If it wont do any damage, I can wait until I get the property cleared and my camp site set up. Then I will have a place to hang it and let it dry.

use to clean carpets for work.  If you use a water base cleaner on oil it will get some out, but the rest will set, and you can never get it out.  Dry cleaning fluid (I use laquer thinner) will get it all out, but you have to dab it with clean rags, don't scrub.  You should try a test patch first to see if the cleaner melts the carpet.  Of course use some soap after the oil is out.  If you take it out of the vehicle you can car wash it after using the thinner.

I think the sulfur smell would be the hardest to get rid of  :'( Keep us posted.

Take the carpet out and pressure wash with hot water.

T%hanks for the info. The bad part is I have no where to hang it up to clean it and let it dry at my apartment and it will be another 3-4 weeks before I get moved. I'll soak up what I can for now and get the rest later.... and yes the smell is AWESOME after the truck sits in 90 degree sun all day and you hop in for a ride

Hahahahahahahah this is the best post ever. I can just imagine the "what the hell" look on your face. Seriously though, if you cleaned most of it out with a rag, empty a medium container of orange hand cleaner onto the area/carpet, work it in, let it stand for 10 mins and wipe out the excess. Make a mixture warm water, dawn soap and a SMALL amount of tomato juice, put it on the area and do the same. (the tomato juice is an acidic that will help with that sulfur smell). Finally, go to Walmart and buy the big jug of "Purple Power" industrial cleaner/degreaser, mix it in about 1/4 with water in your carpet cleaner. Work in in with your cleaner and repeat. Ask me how in know? Have it happen in your house entery room from your garage.

use a product called castrol purple power.  You can get it a O'Reilly auto parts.  Works on carpet and clothes

Throw a load of oil dry on it ,it's easy to clean up and if you leave it on long enough it'll suck it all out. Stir it around once in a while as to get the wet stuff off the bottom.
It's a quick fix and better you than me.

That's a great idea to hold me over until Sunday (when I will have time to clean up this mess).

I think if your drink a few Budweisers and then take a long hot piss on it, that would work and probably improve the smell. The acid and heat in your piss will break down the 90w and natural flushing action of pissing on it will wash it out the drain plug hole..   

I had it happen in my 4 door tracker except it was used oil leaking out of a front diff.... It never ever went away... I yanked the carpet and sold the car...

I would use the carpet cleaner and then chuck the carpet cleaner....or you could always rent one! I have a little green machine that I use to clean my carpets in the car an if you put boiling water in it with some upholstery cleaner you would have decent results...

Doesn't Tennessee mud smell like 90W anyhow...

i have a buddy that owns a detail shop. i'll call him tomorrow and ask him. i know what will get the smell out, but you need to get the oil out first
