clicky starter problems...
« on: October 08, 2009, 06:03:01 PM »
ok, its a 1990 sidekick. drove it to and from work daily for 3 years. drove home from work today and went to jump back into the truck after it sitting for 5 minutes. started right up, drove to the bank, ran inside and went to leave and it wouldnt start. just click under the dash, couldnt tell if there was any clicking under hood. got out and hit the solinoid with a wrench and it fired up.
so, is this something to do with the clicky starter problem or just a dying starter (dead spot)?

It's a dying starter.  I've been through this on both of my Trackers.  Luckily the starter is easy to change out.  Took me about an hour for the last one.  For the last one I bought it at Advance Auto for $110.  There are cheaper options but this was quick and has a guarantee.   Here are some of my previous threads on the subject of starters.

Why does banging a starter make it work?

What do you pay for starters?

Mine did the same thing, no warning at all.  Lucky I had a hammer with me so I got home.  It is an easy swap as far as starters go.  I think I paid 65 for mine from Kragen.

ok, it started once today on the starter. (out of 5 times) bump started it most of the time as i parked on hills and truck was still warm.
after work went out to start up the truck and no starter. went to bump start, wouldnt start (its -15 outside. so it takes a bit of cranking to start cold)

went and hit the starter solinoid, still no go. went and wiggled some of the starters wires, and bam it started up. drove it home and started and stopped it several times, it wont not start now.

so what wires go where, i know of the main wire off of the battery, then the hot wire from ign. so im guessing theres either a loose ign contact at the starter or the wire is broken by the starter.

oh well, ill get a better look tomorrow, its to cold now to go outside...
