NEED HELP 87 Samurai 3/4 throttle at IDLE
« on: November 09, 2009, 07:06:07 AM »
1.3 carb, 87 sammy

I was out wheelin, went through a huge mudhole, wave came over hood, engine didnt stall, shortly after I get these light on the cluster, sensor, battery, and brake.  sounds like a short, I figure no biggie, we keep wheeling with no issues. as were leaving(always happens) see a "little" hole, that turns out to be huge, bow wave showed up on bottom of windshield, over hood, I almost shut if off, but the water went back down, so I got out of the hole, but I noticed while in the hole, felt like the accelerator was stuck. so after I get out, its still screaming, foot off the gas.  I mess with the petal, its fine, I shut it off, been messing with it for awhile now linkages seem to travel their full distances, nothing seems stuck.  Could it be something electrical?  Ther was no water in the airbox at all, ad the carb throat is clean.  ANY ideas???

Thanks alot..

is what open in the carb?  the carb seems fine, i ran some carb cleaner through it, and all over the linkages, worked them, they seem to be ok.  I do think its some kind of sensor or something thats making the truck rev up so high.  I cleaned the underhood out realy well, i disconnected the battery lastnight and Im going to go check now to see if maybe that reset something, the fusebox was wet too, so I sprayed fast evaporative cleaner on it, if this doest helo I guess I will check all connections and spray them, if that doesnt do it, im lost..  hoping maybe someone will have run into this before.

what would happen if I somehow got water in my gas tank? trying to think of all possabilities..  I dont know how the samurai computer "thinks"

Did water get inside? if it was that deep and got inside I would fear for your ECM.

The ecm is mounted behind the glovebox yes? the water might have got in there, but I have all kinds of stuff in the glovebox and there was no water in there.  also, the timing ckeck plug fell out, and I was getting some clutch issues so I figure I got some crap in there.  how bad is that?  Ima have to get in there soon to change everything anyway, I assume water will drain back out of there?

but as far as the idle thing, Im lost...  I checked underhood connectors and saw a couple with moisture in them, i cleaned them and no change..  It always idled high(prob 1500 or so rpm) now its like 3/4 throttle at idle.

How could I see if the ECM is bad, is there a port? can I take it to autozone and have them check it?  I doubt it but ?

I don't know if this will help but the other day my engine got real wet from a mudhole and afterwards it idled at about 2500 rpm and messed with the idle a little bit and when it idled down a little bit i started hearing a miss fire so i changed the plugs and what not and when i cranked it up it idled back at normal.

I will check the plugs... I messed with the idle, and did the thing where you bend that piece to line the line up(hope that makes sesne)  I took out my ecm, there was some dirt on the plug, so it might have gotten wet, but the board is PERFECTLY clean, and doesnt have the fried board smell.  I been messing with the carb, I cant figure it out.  There is no pause, when that engine stats its at like 4k rpm instantly.  The linkages go all the way back when the petal is resting, and there is alittle play in the cable, It has to be something electronic, some kind of sensor, is that possible??  I cant believe noone has done this before, with al the sammys out there... and mudholes for that matter...

Spark plugs are fine, everything seems fine, every electrical connection I could find I sprayed out with contact cleaner.  I sprayed the ECM with electronic cleaner, no change.

One thing interesting, If you unplug all the connections to the carb, it still does it, and if you unplug the ECM it still does it.  the carb and intake were completely water/dirt/mud free after I got out, any ideas??

Thanks

It almost sounds like you have something wedged inside your carb holding it open.

Ok, a carb guy looked at it, pulled it apart cleaned it, and said the secondary throttle blade was stuck open, and that he got it loose and cleaned it up, now it idles normal(a bit high) but driving home on the interstate, I start to notice a problem that got worse as the miles went by. It started.  in 5th, foot down it would start to hesitate, So I would downshift into 4th, build up speed and shift back into 5th, when the revs were high in 5th everything was fine, but as the speed came down, the hesitation started, then 30 mins in, when I would downshift into 4th foot down it would hesitate real bad, for a second, then when the revs came up it would b smooth again, so I stayed in 4th, then it started to hesitate in 4th, then I got to my exit, came to a red light, idles fine, I put it in 1st, dies right when I hit the gas, so I started it up and floored it, took off in 1st, shifted into second, when the revs dropped, engine died.  Now it starts fine, but the second you touch the gas, it dies.  Still got the 3 lights, sensor, battery, and brake.
The fuel had good flow where it comes into the carb, and its clean.

Any ideas??? Im lost,  Its sitting at a speedway.  Anyone around Indy want to come look at it tomorrow?

Kinda sounds like your accelerator pump isn't working.

air filter wet
secondarys are vacuum operated
air filter starts to dry.   Less vacuum more normal idle
but still not enough air flow for high rpm or load
replace the filter and spark plugs to resolve

Air filter isnt wet, I can replace the plugs, the accelerator pump has the metal bar across the top of the carb, with a rubber boot going into it? That rubber boot is shot, could that be an issue?
