pcv really needed?

pcv really needed?

sorry i am full of questions today, but since i am working on the front end problem i figure i will go ahead and finish my snorkle.

is the tube going from the pcv to the al intake really needed or could i block it off.  i would like to get rid of the al intake tube and use a different system which i think will work real good except for hooking in that tube.  thanks all! :) 8)

 You would be much better off putting it back online. It controls the amount of oil vapor pressure build up in the crankcase....a.k.a. Positive Crankcase Ventilation.

I would think that if you completely blocked the PCV that you would cause oil leaks because of pressure against the seals, but I could be wrong.

I blocked it once and smkoke started to build , obviously the oil starts leaking , what you can do is to connect the pcv to a separate filter totally independent from your snorkel

this seems like a good idea, BUT is the neg. vacuum created by the intake important?  if it is not i could just run a longer hose off it up out of the way (lil snorkel) and put a filter on the end...? ???

You are correct... you could build a system similar to the pre-smog engines. (A snorkle tube came from the crankcase and hung in the airstream beneath the vehicle. They also used a vented oil filler cap. They used a metal filter inside the cap.)

The problem with these, of course, was all that blowby went into the air. It made the car smell of burned oil after a while. The engine oil also got dirty much quicker and engine life suffered.

thanks mperry, that makes sense mostly.... why would the engine life suffer, it seems that the way it is set up now i am sucking oil fumes into the intake system.  wouldnt blowing it into the air be better on the engine?

That's the point.  It sucks the oil fumes in to burn them so your vehicle doesn't pollute the atmosphere.

With the tube just hanging there it will blow oil fumes out but also suck dirt in.

That is why you have the valve.  It is sort of a one way check valve.

I think mperry means that engine life suffers because of said crap that can get into your motor that way.  I would just leave it man, If it ain't broke don't fix it ;D.

thanks for the info on here everyone. I just got a samurai and have been going through it all and noticed the other day that the ind of my pcv was broken off and that the last owner just got a bolt and stuck it in the hole, I think now I will get a new pcv and stick a short filter on it.
