MSD Offroad Ignition

I was doing some searching around and stumbled upon this MSD - 6 Off Road Ignition System on the Rocky Road website under the Suzuki / Engine section..

According to MSD..

The 6-Offroad will install to virtually any vehicle with a 12 volt electrical system and a distributor. It will connect to points, amplifiers or magnetic pick-ups on 4, 6 (even-fire) or 8-cylinder engines.


Can anyone say if this will work on the 2.0L Grand Vitara's with the coil packs? I know these vehicles doesn't have a distributor but i really like the design 'multiple spark' concept of the MSD offroad system..

What are your thoughts on the topic?

Right off the bat I'd say no.    You would need convert to a distributor style system.

However it does seem like an interesting idea and I think it would not be far to develop a kit that comes with 4 (or 6) MSD coils and plugs into the stock coil connections, it would just need an extra controller to watch when the ECM intends to fire a coil, and then in turn fire it multiple times.

this system will work on your truck but why you have sequential coil packs. and the msd is waste spark. So what this mean is on a sequential it fires before the power stroke on each cylinder per power stroke. Waste spark fires 1-3 and 2-4 at the same time. so you wear out part faster.

Why is it that you want to go msd ? There is no way even with a turboed motor making 400whp will you max out the stock smart coil packs.

Actually this particular system states that it uses a distributor.

Some waste-spark engines (Ford minivans come to mind) come from the factory with "forward" platinum plugs in the front bank and "backwards" platinum plugs on the rear bank, (the platinum tip is actually on the side electrode instead of the center).  A bit cheaper than using double-plats all around.  This way the plugs wear out evenly.   Waste spark works differently simply to reduce the amount of coilpacks on an engine without having to go to distributor (reliability).

Exactly.  I know some old TurboDodge guys running 30+psi boost still using the stock coil and wires.  Don't upgrade untill you really need it, it's suprising how far the stock ignition system will go.

I think it was the mult-spark gimmick, not the power.

Off the wall, especially since I have a 90 Tracker, I was just exploring the Vitara section and saw this.  I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500, Z71, w/ 5.3L V8.  I added the MSD ignition coils and the wires...didn't notice anything.  No MPG gain/loss, no power difference to be felt (although I THINK it felt a little stronger when I was getting on a freeway onramp and punching it, it seemed to take off better from 4,000RPM and up.  But that's a lot of RPM).  I'd like to say I noticed a slightly smoother idle, but that could be because I changed out my spark plugs at the same time ::) And, they were expensive as hell.  I'm rather disappointed in my decision to buy them...it was stupid.  I use the truck as a daily driver and occasional light-duty towing, if any, and hardly anything offroad I would even consider close to "hardcore." 
I think they were way more performance-based than my scenario.  I'm sure they work better on high-performance engines and/or people that race their trucks.
Recommendation:
Don't upgrade untill you really need it, it's suprising how far the stock ignition system will go.
