Home-built bumper update
« on: July 16, 2004, 07:50:37 AM »
Just finished the skidplate and started attaching the winch. I still have to add the fairlead and the rear supports to the winch plate, but at least it's on there! what do you think? Not too bad for home-built, eh?
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

Bumper looks great, good job. Is that by chance a Mile Marker winch? Kinda looks like one.

I like your bumper! I on the other hand cancelled my order for my bumper, I've been waiting since april and was given a possible date of september delivery. I have a sponsor for my truck (pavement princess) and his name is plastered on the truck and he's telling me to be at a showing on august 10, so I've gone to another supplier who said I can get one in one week. I'm not naming names but if feel the service could have been better when I ordered the first one and had been told the wait would be 5 to 6 months so I would know what to expect.  < venting >  :-/

Yes, it is a Milemarker winch. a Milemarker E3000 to be exact. I'll be adding the roller fairlead once it arrives and will be using it with a snatch block pretty much all the time. The next steps in it's building will include a hoop over the winch to protect it as well as add a place for a pair of off road lights and I'm also going to be adding a large 1/2" bolt with a nut to each side where the bumper bolts to the frame for added strength. I'll have to cut a hole big enough in the frame to allow me to slip the nut inside, but the added strength will be worth it. It will also be getting a nice gloss black paint job once it's all done, but with how much use it will see, I can't see the added cost of powder coating it. I'm also adding a pair of weld-on D rings from tractor supply store to give me better recovery options.

This thing *was* originally going to be made from 2" round seamless exhaust tubing, but my friend and fabricator found a huge pile of this 2" square stock behind his shop, so we used it instead. The skidplate is 12 gauge steel deck plate welded to a truss that's bolted to the front A arm bolts, as well as bolted to the cross member under the tranny and the bumper itself. Plus the skidplate has stiffening ribs added to the top side of it to keep it from buckling.

Is your skidplate attatched to the diff crossmember?

it's attached in the rear to the crossmember just behind the front diff. In the middle just at the bend in the skidplate it's attached to the front lower A-arm mounts and the front edge is attached to the back of the bumper.
