why nothing bigger then a 12? there are alot of subs that are designed well enough they are still tight even all the way up to a 15"

and i think i know what im doing to...since i used to use that as my sole income..and i still make more doing installs then i make at my reg job...i can do about 2-3 a week

steve O not a bad Idea. When I painted my zuk I pulled off all of the interior body panels because I wanted to paint the inside as well as the outside. Anyhow in all the little nooks and crannys I found pink insulation (yeah like house insulation with out the paper backing) I noticed a huge difference in sound after putting the zuk back together with out the insulation. Rattles galore! Now my door sound tinny when you shut them. I specifically left the insulation out because it was absorbing and retaining water and causing my zuk to rust from the inside out.. some of it was nasty brown muddy and border line moldy.. If you have ever been to Oregon then it makes sense that one wetass place!

if u are getting water inside ur rig and the insulation is absorbing water then u need to switch to a diff style insulation..u can do the fatmat/dynomatt stuff which is kinda like tar paper with a shiny back or u can do the peel and stick insulation from ur local home improvement store..the insulation is about half what the other stuff costs

I agree with this statement fully. One 12" sub in a sealed box gives great SQ.

As for you 92Sidekick4x4, I did a neat little trick to solve EVERY rattle in my rig (trust me, I'm anal about that stuff): First you go to the wreckers and find some cars with that thick lining that all cars have in them. Get like a ton (seriously, a ton...) and if its wet, just dry it out in the sun and then start stuffin' it everywhere! I have that stuff behind all my panels, all my doors and even under the original carpeting. Its a typical setup, but if you want to go extra baddass, you can stratigically install brass pegs (not the small stuff, the big ones) around the areas where you are pushing the most sound, typically bolted to the frame (where you probably have your 6x9s) and inside the rear door. If you have any questions just let me know. I have to get a digital cam to post some pics though...

i don't know about you guys but when i took my tailgate panel(the plastic one) off, their was about 10 sox stuffed in the braces. is that normal?  and what about useing old clothes for rattle dampening?

How about siliconing the plastic piece to the tailgate. Thats what I did when I put my dimondplate on. I have no rattles.

Yeah, I know what thats like! I replace the stuff in my door every time rain gets in my ride. Its a big job to do, but it doesn't rain much up here.

Not at the moment. I'll hunt around in my burned cd collection because I know I backed that set of images up. I thought it was a neat trick and if anyone wanted pics I would show 'em. If I can't find them I'll just take some new ones. Can't at the moment because (ironically) its raining like a bitch.

Your best sound will come from properly designed enclosures. Mounted mine using picture hooks (metal tab slides into another bracket)... bolted one pair to each box & other 4 to floor. The boxes could be removed by opening the back door... or by the thief who busted the heck out of everything.

It's probably the plastic panel rattling on the door frame. It's tricky to build for a SK (the door tapers) but the plastic can be replaced w/ 1/2" chipboard, covered in carpet. U just shim it around the edges.

If you want to keep the door panel, line the inside of the panel & the back door w/ carpet pad & put some kind of gasket (or silicone cement) behind the panel to keep it from rattling.

just do what i did..1/4" MDF cut to size i got carpet from lowes since it was black wraped it all the way around the wood back and front then screwed it back down(black screws u cant see them at all) no rattles and it looks alot nicer then the plastic thingymabobo

Yeah, I have become a firm believer in the MDF for filling. I suck at shaping well so I do as little as I can. If you are good at those kind of things, you can do some neat soundproofing and(ahem) carpeting stuff. My Kick rides really quiet, the only thing that makes noise is the wind against my car, as I don't have those hard to find Ventshade trim for my windows.

Definately true. Whne I worked at a streo shop in College we use to have people come in and have custom boxes made on a regular basis. There were many people that would reutrn to the shop 6 months down the road complaining that their box did not hit as hard as their buddies box with the same set up. Almost always they had taken a hole saw and cut numerous holes adding ramdom length (whatever their firend had) ports to a sealed enclousure and wanted us to fix it ::) Need less to say it was inpossible to explain to them the concepts of a properly designed box (air space, tuned ports etc...). What was funny about it, almost always, those same people opted for the sealed inclousure because it was cheaper and expected us to fix their problem when they decided to 'port it' them self.

You both can be correct on porting.

As for porting, this link explains it fairl well... it depends on the speaker. Porting allows for more speaker movement at a lower power range, especially for large speakers.

Basically, as stated:
"As for ported or not, that depends on if the speakers are designed to be ported or not. Some speakers can't handle being ported because it allows for too much movement of the cone. And some speakers aren't well suited for a sealed enclosure because it takes too much power to drive them."

Alright! I got back from my trip and dug up these old pics of my original sound-proofing. I know they aren't the greatest but I know 92Sidekick4x4 wanted some pics.



Here's the rear all stuffed.





Not sure what the hell I stuffed there, but all I remember is that I got it out of an old wrecked crown vic and the stuff is awesome. It's like a white foam with carpet on it and it cut the engine noise down to a bare minimal!







Stuffed the middle cavities tight because of a bad rattle.







The floor carpeting was taken out and then used as a blueprint for the stuffing. I have almost 1 1/2 inch of sound proofing under the original carpet. Watch out for the back seat (4door), you have to do some riggin' to get the seat to settle back in properly.







I got lazy and just layed out some extra padding under my deep tread mats. It added to the engine 'deadening' goal. Very effective, although crude.
