Gear problems
« on: August 02, 2010, 03:36:41 PM »
I dont have a lot of experience with trucks so I need some help. I want to run 35" tires on my samurai but I dont know which gears I should use. I want to still be able to drive it on the road but I dont want the gearing to be so high that I have no use for my lo gears except crawling. I'd rather use my rig for mudding and trail riding than for crawling. Any suggestions?

5.12 in the diffs and a 6:1 T-case gear set, 4:1 gears aren't low
enough with 35" tires for a true crawl ratio, you will end up smoking
your clutch on the tough stuff

Have you taken your rig in deep mud? and can you get it up to speed easy?

I avoid mud for the most time so I'm not really the person to ask :)

I have a carbed 1.6 8v and have no trouble hitting 60mph on the road, it's not a speed monster but it does alright.

A friend has 6:1 and 3.7 diffs with a stock 1.3  on 32" tires, 50 seems to be max for him, and hes working that poor 1.3 pretty hard.

Keep in mind that a 1.6 has about 30% more power than a 1.3.

The setup I built was a 1.3, with a 1.6 head, 5.38 diff gears and
a 4:1 T-case gear set on 35" MTR's it just had a little too much
trouble crawling and required too much clutch work, and I'm sure
it will need a clutch in a short time if you wheeled it hard on the
rocks all the time

I run 5.12 gears and a 6.5:1 t-case, works great in low range with 33x12.5" tires.  My next set will be some 35" while the 33's will probably find their way onto another vehicle.

My only issue is a lack of speed in high range.  With the 4 speed I am limited to 55 on a straight, just don't have the RPM's to go any faster.  I would recommend the 6:1 or 6.5:1 as a start, see how you like it.  Then drop down to the 5.12 if needed.

What I think would probably work best is a 4:1, 5.12 gears and a Kicker 3 or Shogun setup with a 1.6L.  Probably an 8 valve just to avoid wiring and go with a side draft.

The 1.6 was the best mod I've done. Those extra 300cc makes a huge difference, allot better street performance, and the extra bottom end torque makes crawling nicer.

It's hard to make a zuk that crawls very slow and is decent on the road.  I'd like a little lower low range sometimes, but I dont want lower high range. thinking of a doubler box, but it's out of my budget at the moment, and I'm woried that the extra torque from that setup will kill my stock axleshafts.

4 Speed??? What are you driving? or did you never try to shift into 5th?

My SJ-410 still has the stock 970cc 4cyl in it and the stock 4 speed transmission.  Running Sammy t-case and axles though.  :)

Ohh,  ;D I was wondering about that.

I had a friend that found his car had a 5th gear after he owned it several years,
one day he tried it and was like, Dohh!

LOL

Well, I do have a 5 speed shifter on it.  It didn't give me the 5th gear though.  :D
