Fender Trimming
« on: August 11, 2010, 02:17:30 PM »
Did a search, but did not find much on trimming out the fenders and wheel wells.  I am running 235's and have a rub issue on tight turns on the inside of the fender well.  It looks like I will need to cut into the passenger compartment floor boards to gain the room I am looking for.  Does anyone have pictures or advice of how they handled this problem?

Hi,triming? ouch! may I suggest lifting your truck instead? I have 4 inches of lift,no triming,no body lift,30 inch tires no rubbing.
I assume it's not lifted because 235's should'nt rubb even on a small lit.I think.

I have a 2.5" pro-comp lift, mild I know, but this daily driver needs a low center of gravity to crawl where I like to hunt.  I would also like to have the clearance for tire chains for the same reason.  The outside fender trimming will be easy, it is inside the wheel well where the floor board and inner fender meet that I have the "rub" with, sort of speak.  If money were no object then I would go for the trail tamer set up that trail tough sells.  The owners daughter has the dream kick for me, but I know it would be too much $$.

i assume you are talking front wheel wells and the rear of the well.
i have a sidekick and used a hammer and beat it in.
everything kinda folded in enough and required no cutting.
mabe too crude?
worked for me.
also, i did more bending, rather than cutting, to open up the wheel well. even put the plastic liner back in.

oops!
i think you may be talking samurai, so i have no idea. sorry.
mabe a hammer would still work...........

I am talking about a tracker, and yes I am talking about the front wheel well to the rear of the well on the inbord side.  I know the hammer is one of the handiest tools in any shop, I just was not sure how much control I would have over where and how things would bend.  Maybe the combo of a relief cut and then a good beating is exactly what that wheel well needs?

rascott- just took another look and I think if I put a relief cut at the base of the tub and then give it a beating it should do it.  Do you know if the rocker panel under the door does much for the support and integrity of the vehicle?  The metal there seems thicker than just the basic sheet metal.

i didn't make any cut into the compartment- i didnt want to have to weld it back up. there is all that sound-proofing material glued to the inside i'm sure would burn well. it just folded into itself as i hammered. must have gotten an inch+.
the rocker panel is structural(by shape) and there is not much else inside there.
i cut open the passenger side rocker after bashing it enough on rocks i was afraid the door would not open if i didn't do something. i replaced it w/sqare tube.
i have a couple of pics of some of it if interested.
this is with the fender off, but mabe you can see how much i beat out of it.

this shows some of the void in the rocker as i was putting tube in.

probably the thicker stuff you spoke of- i cut into it to fit the tube.

That looks like it would accomplish what I need.  Thank you for the pictures. Does your rig have any lift, what size tires are you running, and did this buy you enough room to run chains?

i did a minor bodylift(|removethispart||removethispart|@ 1 1/8") by rearranging the mount rubber(made dics out of some old conveyor belt material), a 2" puck (jeff's) suspension lift, and run 31" tires.
2nd pic shows a mount.
i'd have to lift it a little more  to get bigger tires to fit(+ gearing, etc.). mabe someday.
i still get a little rub in flex/turn, but not bad and i don't mind.

i've never put chains on it, been looking for 2 sets.
i'm sure i'd have to be carefull with them on, but have run into situations where i wish i had 'em!

This is the only pic I could find showing how I adjusted mine... I cut out the floor, bent thick sheet metal amd welded in an inner and outter layer... Worked better than the hammer method used on the other side that rusted out quicker..

That's clean Zig.  Thanks for the input fella's.  I must admit it is nice to have a rig to beat and bend on that is not critical to the families needs.  It is quality therapy at a bargen basement price ;D

get yourself a pneumatic air saw they work great for lighter gauge metal and have very fine control. there kinda hard to find but worth it. or then again you could get the blow torch, 8# hammer, chainsaw, or back in to it with a old powerwagon. seen it all! :P
