:o :-/ ??? ::) Kids! Unless it's clogged or no longer cuts down on NOx or HC then leave well enough alone. It doesn't give you a seat of the pants feel or drastic fuel economy. If you ask me the energy exerted on "gutting" the cat could be used elsewhere to actually add performance. Anyone with a dyno sheet to prove me wrong post it.  :P
But I like to smell my unburnt fuel, dammit! >:(

I don't have dyno results, but there is alot of difference in my kick.  Maybe my cat is getting plugged, I don't know, but when I went back to straight pipe even my girlfriend could feel the difference in acceleration.

FWIW, I had an old, old pancake style cat (probably clogged) pulled off my car (not the Tracker) and replaced it with a new hi-flow cat with the same result as yours.  The hi-flows probably flow as much exhaust as a straight pipe and you have better emissions.  The only downside is more $$$.

My cat was plugged. It was the only reason why I bought it. Its almost like the zuk is constipated when it has a plugged cat. No place for anything to go.

I agree.  Unless someone can show me hard prof of the great benifites, I'll keep the cat in place.

Now, has anyone tryed getting rid of their muffler and just running a pipe from the cat back???

One more hit from a rock or log and my muffler will be gone.  It's just in a bad place.

I've thought of just replacing it with a straight pipe.  Don't know what it will sound like.  Don't want to be too ricie...

I had just the gutted cat with the muffler cut off for a while, and it wasn't too loud... It was loud enough to drown out the tire buzz, though... I think it'd sound fine... since if you've got some sort of hole or leak at the muffler, it wouldn't be too much louder than it is now, methinks...

You need to remember also that if your truck is OBD2 (96 and newer), it has a second O2 sensor that monitors the operation of the cat.  If you take the cat out or gut it, you will get a constant check engine light and be stuck in open loop, which will decrease your gas milage.

Mine sounded pretty good with just a straight through glass pack instead of the muffler but also had a tailpipe.
Sounds a little louder now with the Main cat gutted, but the front two keep it quiet still.
Having the 6 cylinder and dual  Pre-cats lets me get away without the check engine light from coming on because one sensor is before and one after the Pre-cats.There isn't one after the main cat.
I drove it many miles for 2 days then rechecked my computer and no codes had been set.

To give you a more throttle heavy sound, oil soak the insulation in that glass pack. Then run the glass pack as far away as possible from the end. The longer tailpipe will reduce the transdusing waves which creates the noise. Under throttle, that's pretty much just a flow-through pipe as there is so much air flow, the noise doesn't have time to resonate itself dead.

I strongly suggest that you keep a working cat underneath your truck. EPA has been known to setup rolling exhaust checks and it's a real heafty fine if you are caught.

That's why gutted cats are the way to go... looks like a cat upon a visual check, but with a muffler, there's no way to poke a wire in to see if there's still core! :P

I think my cats plugged, I can smell it.  It would be cheaper to put in a piece of straight pipe, but he check engine light is bright. I have a 97, I don't have a problem taking the light out, but will it really decrease my mileage. I  had a ford focus with a header and no cat, I bought a o2 cheater, so the light wouldn't come on.

I've only heard, but the, inspectors, will want to figure out why you vehicle is not passing. You may be required to bring it to an inspection station.

well if i bore it out are there any tips anyone can give me?

like is the Suzuki Cat made up of a "paper" or "fiber" type of filtration or is it those kind that have 100's of little glass marbles in it?

and really i'm doing it to increase my fuel economy for my cross country trip.

all ready did a full tune up, this was going to be a bonus...that is if it actually impromes any economy, sounds like a few people say no.
