Tracker rearend ratio
« on: September 22, 2010, 10:58:35 AM »
I am new to this and was wondering what gear ratio is in my 1990 tracker w/an auto trans?  Another question I have is that when going down hills, basically letting it coast, my check engine light comes on but turns off as soon as I give it throttle, any Ideas?

4.62.
EGR or TPS problem maybe?  TPS would be my guess.  Just sitting and idling, does the CEL come on?

No, it only comes on when coasting down hill.  What is a TPS?

Makes sense, it looks as if the TPS has been moved recently.  I just got the tracker a couple of months ago and trying to work out all the little bugs.  I have got a rear bumper and tire rack coming.  The 4inch lift is already installed.  Now a little body work and gears and the 35s are going on.  Thanks for the help.

Adjust the TPS per the factory service manual, or even a haynes manual, and see if that takes care of the problem.

Its currently adjusted all the way in one direction.  When I got it, the guy told me that it idled high and they could not get it to come down.  It looked like someone was trying to mess with the TPS and all the other adjustments on the FI.  All that was wrond with it was it needed a thermostat, it never warmed up so the computer kept the idle up all the time.  Got that changed and now it idles just fine, now I have to fix all of their "adjustments".

35's? Better do some serious beefing up to that drivetrain!

Its an auto and all of my wheeling is in the snow for now, not as hard on drivetrain as rockcrawling, if fact it is pretty forgiving.  Maybe someday when things slow down I will be able to add to that and do some rock crawling, but for now I am too busy and the snow is right out my back door from about November to late May.  Currently it has 30x9.5 and I use it as my daily driver.  I will only use the 35s when wheeling, otherwise it will always have the 30s on it.

You do know your going to have to do some SERIOUS fender cutting, and a minimum of 3-4" of suspension lift as well as 3+" of body lift just to get 35's under it. Your also going to run into a crapload of other issues as well, ultra weak braking power, no pick up or acceleration to speak of,  severely overworked suspension parts and driveline parts. But, if you just use it in the snow, maybe , just maybe you may get away with it. Do yourself a favor, and hit the junkyard and pull a couple of diffs out of a manual and swap them in.

I was already going to do that and I was thinking about installing the tcase gears as well.  Either that or I will dual tcase it. Im not sure yet, one thing at a time.
