You should be able to just slide the tranny/tcase back far enough and not to actually have to drop them out, to access the clutch. You'll have to remove the rear driveshaft, of course. And you can either drain the tcase, or undo the front driveshaft and make sure it stays in the tcase, when you move it back.
X2 on unbolting the slave cylinder. That is how I have done it before, when removing the tranny from the 1.8.
