X-90 ring and pinion upgrade
« on: November 23, 2011, 01:07:01 PM »
I would like to upgrade the gearing a bit on my x-90 , 1997 , 1.6l , 16v .... i am running 30" bf mud terrains now but may get 31's next ...what would be the ideal pinion and ring gear ratio  for me to drop in it ?  Right now i have no take off power till i get up over 3000 rpm which sometimes takes awhile, especially on the hills.
Would just changing the rear ring and pinion do the trick ?  the front end is stock independant , i wouldn't really need to modify this as well would i ?

And where is the best place to get a good ring and pinion gear set for my x-90 ?

The optimum would be the factory 5.63 gears. They would have to be sourced used as they are no longer carried by Suzuki and no one makes R&P's in the aftermarket for the sidekick/tracker/x90. Expect to pay a premium price.

The stock X90 should be 4.66s or thereabouts so you would get a reasonable reduction with the 5:12s from a 5sp Track/Kick
2000 Vitara 1.6, 3+3 Lift, 33"MTs, 5:83s, LWB brakes, Winch, Snorkel, Safari Rack
1986 SJ413K PickUp, 1.6L conversion.

The factory offered the 5.63 and a 5.38 R&P on a very limited amount of sidekicks years ago, Calmini used to have a 5.88 but they were discontinued. Those are your only real options, if it fits a sidekick it fits the x90 as they have the same frame and drivetrain, just different bodies.

Not sure what your current gear ratio is, what transmission do you have? I am not for sure positive but I thought i remember reading some x90's didnt have 5.12 R&P from the factory so that would be an improvement.

Another option is to go with a 260 torquer cam and a Doug Thorley tri-Y header for more power down low in the rpm range where you are mostly driving.

Yah it definatly need more power ...lol , i have found a couple site that are selling 5.38 ring gears but they are backordered . How hard is it to change a ring and pinion on these zukies , will i have to heat the ring gear like i've seen others do , i have never changed one before , quick learner though !! I also discovered 4:62.1  tranny case gears for low range torque %134 gain , might be a future upgrade .

That sounds too low for my driving applications . I use my rig for hunting and playing , dirt roads and maybe logging trails .

That is exactly the types of terrain I drive on in the mtns, mostly logging/skidder trails, hunting, and back/dirt road driving, as well as just running into town(20 minute drive on dirt and pavement).

I am running 31x10.5's with 5.12 gears in my 98' Sidekick and she is slightly down on power, the 4.24 transfercase gears are the very next upgrade planned here shortly, even before the torquer cam.

I wouldn't even mind having a little better out of the gate punch than stock , she only goes 100 km's /h full out now , the lower gears will will cause me to loose even more top end speed won't they ?    still a good trade off !!

You will gain power everywhere and get a hiigher top speed, with your current gearing the engine just cant provide enough power to get to a higher speed.

I don't think any X90s had 5:12s from the factory
