Headlight wiring?
« on: January 14, 2012, 10:43:24 PM »
My Tracker came to me without lights or plugs (wrecked). I did a quick-fix and got some lights set up for my low beams but now I'm working on high beams and am a little confused. Does anybody have the wiring diagram? Are these constant hot? How does that work with a dual filament bulb with only 3 wires on the plug? Why do I still have 2 ground wires after I've used 2 for the low beams?

The bulbs have two filaments with a common connection - this is how all dual beam headlight bulbs that I have seen are wired.  You can either wire the common connection to ground and apply +12v to the remaing connections one at a time (most US domestics seem to be wired this way), or you can wire the common connection to +12V and apply ground to the remaining connections one at a time (which is how Suzuki and many other japanese manufacturers do it).

I'll post a Suzuki diagram in a bit - the Tracker should be similar.

Edit.

I've attached a PDF with the headlight wiring of a 99 Vitara - it's typical of how Suzuki wired most of their vehicles - if you have a 98 or earlier, you probably won't have the relay or the diode - it should be close nough that you can use it as a guide.

Good point. I've been playing with L.E.D.s so much lately (which can only be wired one "direction") I forgot that filament bulbs don't care about polarity. They can take power through the contact or the base as long as they have a complete circuit.
Thanks.

Should of specified that it's a '96.

Thanks for the PDF. Gave you some "tech rep".

If I'm reading that correctly power comes in on the w/r and w/bl (I didn't realize each headlight had separate feeds). The grounds are triggered as follows. r/w triggers low beam and r triggers high beam, both through the dimmer switch.

w=white
r=red
bl=blue

If I'm off on anything let me know, plan to attack this tonight.
