cant turn left!!!!!
« on: April 03, 2012, 05:39:40 PM »
I did a YJ spring conversion and now the steering bar(not sure its real name) hits my leaf spring when i turn left, only allowing me to turn half way. what is the fix for this?!

the little orange arrow is the thing that hits.

It looks like a "Mercedes arm" setup...

It is hard to see with the arrow blocking the view, but is the tierod mounted on the top of the steering arm or below?

It might be possible to eliminate the problem by mounting the tierod on the bottom of the steering arms.

The "steering rod" is actually called the "draglink".

I bought a RRO (hey, I bought it used on a truck - so it was all there!) OTT and it uses a single arm on the right side for both the draglink and the steering arm.  The draglink is mounted inboard of the tierod so they don't get "tangled"...

I hope that this helps!

idk if it is stock or not. it had a spring over lift with stock leafs when i bought it. i just did the YJ conversion and now the extra arch in the springs makes it hit. but i'll take a look at it and see it that'll work. thank you

Those arms are on a taper, he is going to probably spend 80.00 on a taper reamer (FJ size) and then another 30.00 for a larger FJ Tie rod end.

mrfuelish:
I was wondering about the taper...If there is a taper to the tierod hole on the arm (and I bet there is) one cannot easily "flip the tierod over and mount it from the bottom to get the clearance you need.

86samurai:
I wish you had a pic of the YJ spring conversion installed so we could see in our collective minds what is going on...

yes you have to run the taper from the other side and make it larger like the fj80 or such.
