1st spoa think i messed up help >.<
« on: September 11, 2012, 08:26:34 PM »
Well i got some hefty spring perches the other day me and a buddy took srings out bushings were destroyed. Welded the perches on the axles by the looks of it the front the pinion is pointing toward if not upward a little towards the t case im scared im gonna have death wobble is there any angle anyone can give me or would pics help.another thought crossed my mind if the angle is a tad to upward would simple 1-3" lift blocks on top of it make the angle better so welds wont have to be ground off and risk messing up my axle tube on my daily?? Also i gained almost 8"with my spoa and my 2"shackles drive shafts need spacers for sure now and truck wont turn right far enough to dodge a bug in the road >.< z-link,  high steer anything i can make thats safe thay wont hit the springs. ??? I know im being a pest but whats stock samy wheel width i know its 15" lug pattern is 5x5.5 looking to see what wheels will give me positive offset to run a 12.50. !!!!

pinion flange angle needs to match flange angle on t-case

no blocks.

pull the pitman off the box and re-center

Pull pitman arm for the steering issue?

Is there a way to correct the angle without re grinding and re doing the whole spoa steps.

You are going to need a Z-bar or high-steer to get your steering around the spring.  Otherwise you will hit your steering bar when flexing or turning right.

For the axle there is two ways to fix your angle issue.  One is to cut and rotate the knuckles.  The other is to re-weld your spring pads.  When you put the new pads on they should be level with the old pads.  That is why I like the wrap-around style pads from Sky Manufacturing, they are self leveling and take the guess work out of the SPOA setup.

I think pics of the axle and perches would be better. Wouldn't shorter shackles help some too?

3rd way = add shims to perches

I must have large perches because from stock height with spoa and 2"shackles its got me around 8.5-9" of lift. With a 28.8"large all terrain. And i have 12" from top of tire to fender. This is my daily so as much advice will help me get it back on road. Thanks

I always forget about shims, as I don't like them.  :)

I agree with 02CalTaco, swap out those shackles and go back to stock length ones. Those look like 2" lift shackles, not 2" longer. In order to get a 2" lift you actually need 4" taller shackles since you only get half the length in lift.  Just swapping those out will help quite a bit with your angle.

Rotating the knuckles is not an easy job.  You have to cut your axle or grind off all the welds on the end, rotate them, make sure everything is squared up and weld everything back together.  It would probably be easier to just grind the perches off and re-weld them.

I have a Sky Z-Link that I have never used and won't because if I go Spoa I have a set of Mercedes arms. I would sell it to you for what I have in it. If you are interested send me a PM.

I would start with shorter shackles and then see what degree shim it would take to get you within spec. I'm not sure but I think on the rear you can get away with some angle, I'm not sure how much and would check with these guys first.

1.  Get rid of those long shackles.  There is no good reason to run shackles that long.  One or two inch longer than stock shackles are ok, but those are just rediculous.
2.  The new SPOA perches are way the hell off.  Do it right and cut the new SPOA perches off and reweld them (or new ones) at the same degree as the old SPUA perches.  Don't mess with shims or cutting and turning the knuckles.
3.  For steering, you will either need a z-link (it works and is cheap, but there are better ways to correct the steering), or get a high steer setup (more expensive, but it will raise the axle end draglink mounting point and is a better setup than a z-link).

They are 2"lift shackles.  Which from what u said are 4" more so if i just put factory shackles or legit 2"shackles it will help and i can prob get the rest with shims. I wont be taking offroad a lot once in a blue moon.  Nascar season. Field day of the past things like that. I pm u about zlink. How many ° does it look out to yall
