Body Lift Intake mods
« on: October 01, 2003, 02:58:50 PM »
Just curious what everyone else is doing that's done the 2 and 3" body lifts.  My stock bellows between the air box tore and I did the highly sexy duct tape repair on it.  Thinking about maybe using some 2.5" aluminum tube and silicone hose to replace that, but what are the rest of you doing?

I used the intake hose off an mid 90s Ford F-150 with a 5.0.  You do have to cut the hose and the spring inside but it worked out really trick.  It goes right over the upper intake side but the box side its a little hard.

It's a tracker.

I think the reason the box side is harder to get on is because it's a 3" inside diameter that's been squished into an oval while the tube across the valve cover is a 2.5" inside diameter.  Actually the hose would have to be the inside diameters the parts are the above dimensions outside diameter.

I was looking at some heavy duty truck radiator hose at Napa to do this with but at $17 a foot for the 2.5" stuff and 20 bucks a foot for the 3" stuff, I'd end up paying $40 just for the hose itself. This would make Mrs Z3bra angry I suspect and frankly I'm not that thrilled with paying 40 bucks for some rubber hose myself. (they won't sell smaller lengths than a foot).  Pretty tough looking stuff though.

If I were to start making a kit would anyone be interested?  I've been looking at pricing on silicone reducer pieces and am somewhat shocked with most of the 3"-2.5" ones going for 30 bucks per and then a hump hose to allow flexibility on the lower end going for another 25 or so.  Just using a 6061 tube between the silicone pieces would be inexpensive for that portion.

I'm not sure what it would cost but after looking around for a distributor of the silicone hose pieces I think making my own might be a realistic option and then they'd take into account the oval shape of the output on the filter box and have it molded in.  Alternately I could look into an s curve mandrel bent aluminum section between two straight coupling pieces but unless you get it done in volume the bends are usually not very cost effective.

Good enough, let me know  ;D

Been looking at the dow-corning website, looks like fabbing up custom silicone hoses is easy.  Just having a hard time tracking down a supplier for unvulcanized silicone tape to make em with.

International Rubber and Supply
Colton Ave. Colton Ca. 92324

I got reducer 2  to 2 1/2" for under $20
and that long silicone rubber hose on my
intercooler less than $17 18" it's 2 1/2" I think,
thing is it all adds up in a hurry, but the prices
I got from them was half the $ than from the
truck supply.

I'll get prices for you if you want to send sizes.

that is an option, but it sucks hot
air right from the radiator, so thats
not the best for power.

Plus if you stick the cone right on the end of the crossover tube it's also sucking hot air from the exhaust right underneath it which is why I was avoiding it. I didn't even think about the radiator part.

THE K&N induction kit for the vitara actually comes with a length of flexible hose that you use to direct cold air from the front of the vehicle directly on to the k&n
works really well

And hey, if all else here fails, Home Depot now sells duct tape in a variety of fashionable colors!!!1 ;D

Just kidding, actually the K&N sounds good, plus a washable filter to boot.  They come in handy if your in a lot of dusty/dirty areas.  Hope something works out,  Dave
