Broke Front End, Diff, Third--Kick
« on: September 30, 2005, 09:57:14 PM »
I just broke my Front differential, third member, or whatever its called!  I broke the housing clean in two.  Its in 2 pieces!  If anyone knows where i can get another one fast and cheap please let me know.  The axles are fine the housing is just cracked open all the way around.  Its a 1997 4dr 4spd Auto 16valve.  I need a Front end with 5.13s i believe.  I live near Elkin, NC 28683.  Any advice or parts would be greatly appreciated.  I really want to go to the Fall Zuwharrie net weekend.  Call my cell 336-366-9556.

Thanks, Alex

go bigger a 7.5 or a 9-inch both hy-bred of course the pot-metal front is not very strong.   hy-bred or the anvilis the only way to go. thats my opinion    stan

Did you broke the axle housing and not the 3rd member. The axle housing goes the width of your Trackick. The 3rd member bolts to the axle housing and is also bolted to the crossmember. It holds the ring and pinion.
I broke my axle housing in my XL7. The 3rd member was fine. When I took it all apart to replace it, I had damaged ring and pinion. I replaced everything with steel housing from a 02 5-sp XL7. I had to locate another ring and pinion as the trannys have different ratios.

Check http://car-part.com. Check locally, then regionally. I had to get mine from NY, I'm in KS.

I've always wondered what you trec/kick guys did about those Alum. fronts.
I know we Sami guys try and swap them into a steel housing to use them.  Although the Alum. housing IS pretty strong.
BTW, I have a complete front axel housing for a trac/kick here at the house that had 5.12's in it.  I just took the ring and pinion out of it.  You're welcome to it for shipping costs.  Just let me know!

Thanks for all your help.  I got a complete 5.13 third member and axle housing out of a 22-spline tracker from Zukimon on the zuwharrie BBS board.  My ring and pinion were destroyed.  I swapped my 26-spline spider gears into the new third and installed it last night.  I also had to replace my radiator.  While i had it out, with the extra room, i did the timing and accessory belts and the cam and crank seal.  So far no problems.  I'll see yall at The Zuwharrie tommarrow!

Thanks again, Alex

steel front axle and third member is a good upgrade - if you can find one...
