Noisey Fifth Gear
« on: October 20, 2005, 12:58:00 PM »
Being new to Suzuki's, A quick question..   When driving, my fifth gear makes a minor whine, (which I'm sure will get worse with time) and am wondering if it is the T-case or the gearbox... When stopped, I put the T-case in neutral, shift the trans into fifth, and get a whine on acceleration and letup.. On the road the same sounds are there, but easier to hear when I'm stopped.. Does anyone have experience with this??????

It might be due to the fact that there is a Suzuki badge on the front of your vehicle.

Seriously though, every suzuki i've ever had has had either tranny or t-case noise.  I always believe it to be the tranny making all the noise, but as long as it still works (which it always still has), then i just keep going.

I think the actual 5th gear is a different type of cut to the others and just produces a different noise, but that's just my opinion.

Mine starting making noise.....couple months later a bearing came out of it, then the hunt for a new transmission began.  Check the grease and see if it looks like it has glitter in it, and make sure it is full of grease.  All you can really do is drive it till it break though...which could take a long time.

Time for a rebuild sounds like. Mine whines in every gear except 4th (1:1), but I've got another transmission sitting in my garage waiting until this one explodes, or I do my 1.6 swap which ever comes first. I'm hoping on the 1.6 swap, mostly because I don't want to do the same work twice.

I've got a whine on mine in 2nd gear (sometimes 3rd) but only around 2500rpms. Right before and after 2500 it's fine. Is that something to keep an eye on? Like some had mentioned, could it spread to other gears?
