ZUKIWORLD Colorado Adventure
We are planning an adventure to the great state of Colorado this year and would like to invite you along. There will be no formal activities just a place and time for fellow Suzuki enthusiasts to meet up and go wheeling, camping, fishing, etc.. on the trail. Colorado has some wonderful sites to see and things to do and we hope to do as many as possible using a relaxed pace. Below is a loose itinerary and some details that we have so far. Things will evolve more as we get closer to the go date so if you're interested make sure and stay tuned here and send me an email ebewley[at]zukiworld.com to get on the list for more specific updates.
Where - We plan to base camp at Taylor Park Reservoir, Gunnison National Forest, Gunnison, Colorado 81210
When - During the week of August 12th thru 18th 2012 ... Come early or Stay late, it's up to you.
Who - Self-sufficient Suzuki enthusiasts that would like to get together and spend some "quality time" with like minded people
What - During the week that we are there we will be doing trail rides in loops from camp at the Taylor Park Res. Some highlights may include:
- Tin Cup Pass, Scoffield Pass, Devil's Punch Bowl, Black Bear Pass, etc..
- Ouray, Montrose, Almont, Gunnison, Salida, Aspen, etc..
- Old mining sites & Ghost towns

This sounds like a great adventure, going to see if I can work it into my Summer schedule.
We've used Ouray as a basecamp a number of time for backcountry exploring in the area. My earliest experiences with wheelin are in the San Juans with my grandfather in his rusted out Willys Wagon. Some many great places to see and explore.
-
Beautiful Place!
We stayed in Ouray, a ton of trails right out of town.
Awesome Trip! I'm gonna try to see what's happening for me then.
-
Man, I'd love to work this out. I lived in Colorado for 12 years, riding and racing motorcycles, and camping out as often as possible. It is truly a beautiful place to be. I hope I can be there. Give me a chance to visit some old friends too.

This killed :( me. I wasn't able to take the " Old Monarch Pass " down the eastern side, down to a half a tank of gas when I got to the trail head, it was gettin dark and snowing lightly. I'm not that adventurous that I'd go that alone at night. It would have been great fun and insanely mesmerizing on a clear starry night. Nothing can compete with a high altitude view of the night sky, well, unless your an astronaut. Really need to do this.
-
I'm going to do my best to make this one. This looks absolutely AWESOME..... If my trip to Kurdistan falls through (looking like it), I am doing this.... I'm thinking of straping the Kayak to the roof of the kick and taking a couple days to drive out 8). If I decide to haul, can I access the camp site with a bone stock Suburban 4x4 hauling a trailer?

I'm in. I will probably be driving a mildly built Samurai (Open diffs, 30" tires, gearing, winch) up from Oklahoma. I'll be going for more of the scenic stuff instead of the more scary, cliffhanger trails. The reason being, my dad will probably come with me and I already scared him pretty good at Moab once, so I don't want to do that again.
Isn't a Samurai really a side by side, street legal ATV anyway?
-
Something in Colorado! Count me in.
-
Let's start building the list: If you're planning on attending, please send me an email ebewley[at]zukiworld.com with the following information. Your name, where you're from, number in your group, what you'll be driving on the trail, and cell phone number. I'll be sending out trip specific details as the activitiy draws nearer via email. General discussion will be posted up here on this thread.
Fun!

I've done most of those rides on a dirtbike too and it is AWESOME! Can't wait to get the tracker out on them. The road over Tiincup Pass is a beautiful ride and fairly easy. One thing I'll have to do is turn up the boost. 11000 feet sucks the power right out of any engine.
-
Don't forget to add me on the list. I'll be driving a Samurai all the way from the reddest of red states: Okie-la-homa.
-
Seen this post....
Zig posted it again as a "Reference" in my Coast to Coast Idea....
I'll can not commit 100% at this time as August is PRIME PIPE BUILDING time and I won't have enough time off to go to
Mohab come Easter this year.
Maybe i can hook up with the "enlistee's" from Minnesota for the trip over (If they can give me a head start each day for a 87 Sammy with the stock 1.3)
I'll e-mail you if I can make it happen, It looks like my kind of trip !!!!

If this wasn't a day and 3 hour drive to and from for me I'd be there... 1500mi is a long way to ride in a little samurai
-
I'm driving all the way from NE Oklahoma, 750 miles one-way, in a Samurai.

I wussin' out this time and towing the Tracker behind a pickup with a camper. I plan to make time on the expressways this trip, crashing in the camper when I get too tired. I only have a limited amount of time, and want to spend as much of it in CO as possible. Did the cross country trip in the Tracker a couple of years ago logging 6000+ miles in about a month. Fun yes, but that's one noisy, bumpy, long ass ride. And that was in a reletively smooth Tracker compared to a Sammy.
Just Google mapped the distance from my house in NJ to the Taylor Park Trading Post: 1865 miles. They figure 1 day 9 hours, or 34 hrs total. I've done it with a co driver rotating sleeping and driving shifts in 36 hrs straight. Don't reccomend that, we were both wasted for days afterward  I'm shooting for 3 12+hr days each way. That's just about how much vaca time I have left for this year too, how convienent 8)

Is anybody going to be bringing family, wives or significant others along?
-
Is anybody going to be bringing family, wives or significant others along?
Yes, I'll have my family and at least three other families will be there as well.
-Eric
-
My wife wants to come along but probably wont be able to make the drive out and back, slavemasters where she works won't let her take more than 1 week vacation at a time. She has 36 days accrued, but they insist in this stupid policy. We're going to try and arrange for her to fly into Aspen where I can pick her up on Saturday night, then drop her off there again the next Friday.
-
Try flights to Gunnison, only about 40 miles away and United flys in and out regularly.
-
Into Gunnison you will only have the puddle jumper flights ( I lived there for 15 years and worked the airport, still have a house there). I might make it, always wanted to do some of the tougher passes above Taylor (Pearl and Taylor Passes), but the snow was always to heavy, even in late Sept. If I can swing it, I will go over to Gunnison and make this run. Lots of light wheeling on the Buena Vista side as well. Another neat, scenic trail is American Flag Mountain (Cement Creek/ CB south). It right around the Taylor Res. area, you can drive to the top of a 12k mountain.
Just heard on the news that snowpack here is only 58%, so campfires might be iffy (high fire danger already).

Thanks for the Tip! Puddle jumper flights are fine. We did the same thing when I went out west on my " test drive " trip. Picked her up in El Paso Tx, but she flew back out of Moab in a small plane, to Denver. she said it was "fun."

Are these something that a relatively stock samurai can tackle? Im still a 4x4 noob, but if it can handle it that would be cool considering I live in CO lol.
-
I will either take a stock or mildly build Samurai. No lockers and no huge meats. Going more for the scenic passes, logging roads etc. We can tag along if others want to try more technical trails.
-

I do think you'd be just fine with a stock Samurai. This will mostly be a scenic run with optional hard spots.

Interesting

Average August High 76 Average Low 42.... WOW, awesome camping weather 8)

That's at 7-9 thousand feet. Get down on the flats between the western slope and the canyonlands, then add 25 degrees. But yeah, that is Puuuurfect !

The picture doesn't do it justice, the water in this lake is emerald green.
Going up to Crested Butte from Gunnison.
I had some while we were wheeling down by Blue Mesa Res. (by Gunnison) They are around an old quarry/powerline road, but can't seem to find them right now. Lots of places to see around the area though.
-
Camped at Blue Mesa on a motorbike trip once. Beautiful.

Thinking about adding a week in front of the one we've commited to. Would people be interested in that?
-Eric

Sure, I'll give you my bosses phone # and you can convince him I NEED the time off.

I'm planning on taking around 2 weeks off work... Two days + to get out there, 5-6 days there, 3ish days to get back (taking the long way home (depending on temps, I may go to Galveston for a day or to via Albuquerque to see some friends 8) >:D 8). So I will have a few extra days to hang out there... If the NM/TX temps are crazy I'm NOT going that way with no AC :P

Is there good fishing up in elevations that high? If so, I may being some gear and strap one of mt kayaks to the roof...

Hi Guys,
OK, this one I think I can make. Denver is only about 500 miles from my house, so add another couple hundered and it is doable in one day. I will have to run it past the boss, but she may love the idea of getting rid of me for a week.
I have a mildly built 2011 GV 4x4; bigger tires and a lift. It has about 11" of air between the center of the truck and the ground. How much damage do you think I will get with the trails we are going on?
In vehicle communication? What will everyone have and use on the trip. I do not have a CB, but I do have 4 of the upper end Motorola GRMS/FRS radios.
I have a bunch of new camping equiptment so this would be a great time to try it out.
If anyone is traveling from the East on I80 and needs a stop over point for the trip, I could accomidate at my residence. Trust me, camping in Nebraska in August is not a good idea. The humidity and bugs will suck the life right out of you.

Mmmmmm, humidity and bugs, my favorite camping additions

Hi Rob - I think your GV will do fine. Remember this is adventure wheeling, not necessarily obsticle wheeling, so you can go around if things get to dicey. I'll have a CB, GRMS/FRS 2-way, and cell phone in the Equator.
Shall I put your name on the list then?
-Eric

This is gonna be a great trip. Can't wait to meet some new folks and do some wheeling....

Hi,
I'm working on the permision part with the wife. These types of of requests I always get a bit worried about as you never know what the outcome will be.
I agree that the trails should be fine in my GV. I looked up the trails on Traildamage.com and they look like they are do-able but may offer me some chalanges. I have never had this vehicle offroad yet. I spent some time growing up in Moab, so I am accustom to wheeling but in much different vehicles.
Don't add my name yet but you can be me down for a strong maybe at this point. I will know more after this weekend.
Thanks,
Rob
-
:( Looks like I'm not gonna make this one, the wife can't get time off until October. We've discussed making a trip out to the Canyonlands/Moab area in October, at least the weather will be nice.
-
Id love to do this but I dont think I could do the whole week, more like just the weekends?
-
Put me on the list. I'm excited to do this and I will work out the logistics at home.
Rob

That would be OK. Some people will be showing up for some of the time and leaving early and/or staying late.

And the only reason I say this is if I start a new job, I wont be there long enough to request a week off lol... I live in CO though so yea..

Count us in Roy Goble from Arizonia, driving a LWB Sidekick. We will be in Gunnison for the months of July and August.
-
Did Scofield pass 30 years ago on a motorcycle. Below Devils Punch Bowl, we ran in to a snow field that covered the road and creek. Guy I was with didn't think he could go back up through Devils Punch Bowl, so we laid our bikes down and sat on them and slid down across the snow for about 200 yards. Unless there had been work done on it the last few years, it would be tough in a Sidekick or Samari. Not saying it can't be done, but it won't be me.
-
Hi,
It sounds like they have done some work on the that trail in the past decade. Here is s trail description from Traildamamge.com:
This trail is not for the faint of heart! The shelf road is narrow and Devil's Punch Bowl is a series of obstacles on a shelf road of loose rock that doesn't seem wide enough in places. It can be intimidating but it is a beautiful trail and really worth the trip.
Schofield Pass meets Lead King Basin and Crystal City in the middle. Lead King Basin is the harder trail of the two so it is recommended that you run it in addition to Schofield Pass.
The Pass can be run in either direction and it is throughout the day. We recommend running it from Marble to Crested Butte. This means that Devil's Punch Bowl will be an uphill climb, with the edge of the road at the driver's side.
Starting from Marble and running Lead King Basin first, you will start Schofield Pass with many signs warning you of the dangers. It immediately gets narrow and stays that way for almost all of the trail. Passing is difficult in most places.
When you reach the metal bridge that has no rails and is wide enough for just one vehicle you are at the bottom of Devil's Punch Bowl. You can see to the top from here so look for vehicles coming down. There is no way to pass anyone in this area. If you are in a group, the leader should go ahead to the top to make sure it is clear, then the rest can cross the bridge and go to the top.
Once at the top of Devil's Punch Bowl the road widens and is no longer a shelf road. The scenery throughout the trail is beautiful, with many waterfalls. There is a waterfall at the end that has parking enough to leave your vehicle and hike to the top.
Follow the dusty dirt road out through Gothic, then Mount Crested Butte, then Crested Butte.
More information can be found here:
http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=45 (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=45)
I read a report of the trail from earlier this year and they said it was improved from previous runs.

Looks like I will be making this trip; I have it written in stone on the calendar! Installing a single rear seat complete with 5 point harness, bringing wife and kid this time. My Samurai is up on the lift, minus a transmission, one axle, and a few suspension parts right now (working out the bugs that showed up during the "next one over" trip). I'll have it ready to go! Colorado wheeling has been on my bucket list for a long time now, and I'll be glad to finally make it out there!
-
That's awesome! This is going to be a great trip. It looks like we will have a fairly diverse population while out on the trail.
I can't wait to have this adventure!

So is the week prior to the 12th a go? I'm trying to plan my time off and mixing a flight out to Vegas to be in my friends wedding during the same time....
Zig
-
Also, does any one know of a good secure parking area in Denver (near or at the airport)? If I make this work, it looks like I am going to need to drive to Denver, leave the Kick there, fly to Vegas for the wedding, fly back to Denver, grab the Kick and then drive down to Gunninson :o
That would put me in Gunninson on the 9th or 10th.
Zig
-
Glad to see more people signing on. 8) I think I might be one of the few in a Samurai though. :D
Does anyone have experience with the stock Samurai carb at high altitudes? I know that it has a high altitude compensator sensor, but how well does it actually work? FYI, I plan on taking an old 1987 "Classic" Samurai out on this trip.

Yeah, they work... It should idle up the engine and give you 35 more horsepower.

I thought about driving out on the 10th and staying in Denver. I would then get up early and head to Gunnison on the 11th. I won't be there the week before.
I have cousins taht live in Denver. I will check with them and see if they know of a secure lot near DIA. I doubt they do but maybe they can look something up or know somebody that would know of a good spot to park your Sidekick.
Rob

Great, thanks.... I may end up tipping the guys at the Parking Spot for a parking spot near the security booth. I have used them before and never had issues at one of their lots, but I never had all my camping gear sitting inside a soft top....

So then I'll have a total of 40hp? ;)
I was more curious if it will calibrate the mixture (lean it out) for the higher altitude. I'll be running the stock carb on a 1600cc engine so at least I'll have some torque for the climbs.

I was wondering if anyone would catch that. :) I've actually done what you're thinking about and it's fine. The stock carb and computer are fine on a 1.6 long block. You'll have enough to motor along ok.
Not hot rod; just OK.

We are all going to be in the same boat at elevation. Even my new GV will be way down on power. 166 HP to move a 4,000 lb slightly rounded brick. ;)
Is anyone planning on panning for gold? That sounds fun to me for an afternoon activity.

The worst fire is up by the Denver/ Ft. Collins area with a few burning around the state. As long as nothing gets going over Gunnison way (it has happened before I was evac'd in 02 cause of a fire there)we should be good to go.....

I have been online looking for a map that shows the location of the current fires. Anyone have one?

I had three of my buddies go out to CO Springs this weekend for an adventure race. The race got canceled about half way through. Everyone had to evacuate the course.
Thanks for the link.

The fires are terrible this year. Of course they are thinking they have an arsonist around the Teller County area, which makes it even more dangerous. I'm about 50 or so miles from the Waldo fire and the entire area is filled with smoke.

I have friends and family in Colorado Springs; they say the same thing. Looks like that fire is growing like crazy. I was looking at a topo map of the area...the terrain looks like a nightmare, from a firefighting standpoint.

I gots me & my Pops motel booked. We will be staying at the Western Motel at Gunnison from 12 -18 August.
-
That's awesome! I can't wait for the trip.
I may have to hit you up to borrow your shower in the motel room. A week of being out doors all day, every day might be too much for my fellow Suzuki enthusiast. ::)
Just to warn you now, I have lots of questions about Samurais. With your list of vehicles heavy on Samis, you look to be an easy target.
Rob
-
I have a house over in Gunnison. Will try and be there all week.
-
I am considering this trip. I won't be roughing it with a tent though. ;D It would be great if more east coasters were going out. I have done I think nearly all the trails mentioned and many more than once.
-
I'm doing everything in my ability to still make this. The past couple of weeks have damn near depleted my vacation fund. AC going out, vet bills, vehicle repair, re-up of all my vehicle insurance, etc..... If I can get the bike and the vette sold in time I will be there. If not, it's not looking to good :'(

Looks like I am in. ;D Vonnie has bought her plane ticket to Durango to join up with me after this part of the trip. I really wish I had someone else from the east coast to make the trip with me. Come on east coasters!
-
I'm doing everything in my ability to still make this. The past couple of weeks have damn near depleted my vacation fund. AC going out, vet bills, vehicle repair, re-up of all my vehicle insurance, etc..... If I can get the bike and the vette sold in time I will be there. If not, it's not looking to good :'(
Zig
I hope everything turns out... We'd really like to see you.
-Eric
Two weeks to go, no vehicles sold and still no resolution at the vet..... This one is a no go for me :'(... Hopefully next time.

That is too bad. I wish we would get an update on who is still going.

I am going and I will be representing the Samurai.

I was hoping to have my 6.5 case in, but it doesn't look like thats gonna happen. Looking forward to meeting those that are going....
-
Well I am going too so but will represent one of the Trackers.
Let me post some pics of some of the trails that we will hopefully do again this summer.
First is my favorite that will really pucker your behind. It is Black Bear Road at what is called the staircase. You drop over a blind cliff corner with a waterfall to your right and you turn left with seeing just about only sky. Telluride is seen far below. This is one way only road, thank goodness.
Second picture is after you are below the falls and you can breath easier but you still have some serious switch backs to deal with. I was rolling with some Jeeps and when they found out I had done the trail before they bravely insisted I go first. LOL
Third picture is from an awesome trail that is the return run from Telluride called Imogene. This picture shows you a view of the switchbacks of Black Bear Road. On the extreme left side of the picture is the fall you do the blind staircase around.
Forth picture is a very narrow shelf road as you climb up Imogene road. A few sections are so narrow I can't imagine driving it in a full size rig.
-
1. Here is the Ouray side of Imogene. You drive along a cliff with a low overhanging wall above you with lots of water dripping down on you.
2&3 Mosquito Pass 13,185 feet in elevation. The trip up from Leadville is a narrow rock slide road with great views the whole time.
4 This is on the downhill side of the Fairplay. Most of the trails in Colorado are old mining roads. This is the remains of a gold mine. Many were silver mines as well.
-
1&2For the return trip after Mosquito Pass we did Weston Pass back to Leadville. Weston Pass is a easy drive but has some neat old mining cabins.
3. This is a look down towards where you came from and is one of my favorites in the Leadville area. The trail is called McCallister Gultch. It is a very steep climb up in dense woods so there is almost nowhere to stop and take pictures. You are constantly dealing with the steep terain and turns. The first time I ever did the trail I was coming down the trail with two on a dirt bike and we were wondering how vehicles would or could ever climb such a steep turning trail. Years later I had built our rig to do it with some ease. Lockers is really almost a must because of the muddy steep trail.
4.We made this into a loop run with a return on Ptarmigan Pass. It is a fairly easy trail in open fields with lots of wildflowers.
-
1 An evening at Turquoise Reservoir Campground near Leadville.
2. Looking back at Turquoise Reservoir the campground is at the far end of the lake. We are climbing up great little trail called Hagerman Pass which is 11,925 feet in elevation. There are some very rocky sections of the trail but is no problem to a 4x4.
3. The peak above treeline.
4. Looking down the other side of the pass.
-
1. Saint Elmo was a ghost town but now has some inhabitants. We did Tin Cup Pass from this side the first time. It is a very rugged road and the first time our Tracker was bone stock with street tires. It was very difficult.
2We did it a few years later an our Tracker was very modified. The crawler gears really helped but I still managed to blow out a rear shock and the rear trailing arm became slotted at the front of the trailing arm. The trail is still very rugged on the Tin Cup side. It did not help that we started from the Tin Cup side and got to Saint Elmo only to find out that the trail we were going to take was washed out so we had to return to Tin Cup doing the trail twice in one day.
3. Here is looking up at the start of the Tin Cup Pass from the Tin Cup side which is the most rugged side.
4 Here is a view of Taylor Lake Reservoir from the Taylor Lake Campground. The area is heavily used as boondocking camping. I would be up for that but I don't know if the group would be.
5. Here is the town of Tin Cup.

Great pictures! This is getting me jazzed to go..

Eric is keeping the first post up to date with who will be attending..... I really hate I'm going to miss this one. It will be an awesome trip....

I think there are others that have shown interest/committed to the trip that aren't on the list. I think you have to email Eric to get on the formal list so other communications can start flying as time grows closer.
I can't wait to be on vacation! :)

I've emailed him, received confirmation, and I'm still not on the list. ??? #6 reply on this thread too and stated I was in.

M. Kallie | New Jersey | Tracker or bentparts forum name said on the last post on page 3 said he is not going but is still on the list.
Here is a link to my google travel map. 1,751 miles to Buena Vista CO. I then cross over State Route 306 - Colorado
Cottonwood Pass Road to Taylor Lake. Route 306 is paved from Buena Vista to Cottonwood Pass then is dirt for about 14 miles until Taylor Lake. It is not too bad. I have done it in my motorhome pulling the Tracker twice. It would be great if some of us could travel together. My plan at this point is to leave PA the 8th. Anyone coming farther? Let's see your travel map. Just map it in google then click on the link button on the top and choose short URL and paste it in your post.

Here's a call out to those that are attending. Please email me (again in some cases) so I can put you on my email list. A bit more information will go out (email) as to meeting times and places as the trip draws nearer. The general bits are updated on the first post of the thread.
Thanks! -Eric

We (my wife and I) will be there. From Phoenix,AZ. We are spending the summer in Gunnison, and have a 1995 4DR Sidekick.

A few months ago a Samurai on Craigslist caught my eye. I bought it from, my new friend, Blake Savage, who grew up next door to where I have lived for the last 25 years. He mentioned this trip to CO and my wife and I have been looking forward to it ever since. We have ATV'ed SW and NE of that area and are really excited about meeting everyone and wheeling in that part of the mountains.
Of course the sammi has been getting tweeked and readied for the trip along with the pickup and camper. It will be my first time flat towing a vehicle and the first time camping and wheeling for our young Aussie, Buddy. Speaking of first, check my post count :)

I have PM'd and still not on the list, but I'm gonna be there. Will have my Samurai. I will not be camping with you all (I have a house in Gunnison), but like I have said, looking forward to meeting everyone.

Sorry got it after I posted.

I was wondering where we are going to camp in the Taylor Park area? There is a few state park campgrounds around the reservoir. I have stayed at Lakeview campground twice. Getting a large group into one campground might be tricky because most sites are reserved. There are lots of places around the area for boondock camping or dispersed camping locations once you get above the reservoir. When you first leave Tincup on the way to Mirror Lake, there are some sites just off the road (this road can be a little rocky at first). In fact before Tincup up from the reservoir there are sites but get off the road a little or the dust from the road can get tough. Northward of the reservoir, there are a variety of sites, including around the Pothole Lakes. In some cases, you should get out and walk the roads to make sure you can get in and out (you're a little blind right from the road). Obviously dispersed camping will not have any facilities. There is a general store/gas station at the start of the Road to Tin Cup for food and gas. There also is a public dumping station just beyond the store.
In the Ouray/Silverton area, I find Silverton has a lot more camping options and is a neat area to stay. Ouray does not allow much in the way of boondocking/dispersed camping unlike Silverton. Ouray does have a state park just outside town but it is very hard to get a campsite. Silverton has more trails close to camp as well. Silverton has several private campgrounds right in the town and lots of dispersed campsites outside of town. Silverton also has the Silverton Train coming into town several times a day.
I prefer dispersed camping myself but with a RV I will not be suffering but camping for free is a lot more fun. BTW, I will be staying in Silverton for a few weeks after our gathering if any of you are interested in staying in that area longer you are welcome to join me.

Thanks for all the great information. I know more information will come out as things get firmed up with everyone attending. It sounds like there will be a gathering on Monday to make sure everyone is accounted for. After that, I don't know what else will be taking place.
I'm tent camping and would love for it to be free if at all possible. I'm not opposed to supporting the local/state/national parks either, but getting off the beaten path sounds like more fun that slab/RV style camping.
Rob
-
There is tons of camping spots around the Gunnison/Crested Butte area. Most of it is public lands. I know of a few that the hunters use and it looks like a summer oldtimers (no offense meant) retreat. Campers wedged in like sardines. Let me know if I can help any, I lived in that area for 15 yrs.

Hey Rob - I didn't notice that you were concerned about camping... sorry about that. In the first post introducing the trip, I talk about where we're going to camp. As I understand it, there are areas around that spot close by that are public, free, and dispersed. I'll talk more to 'my guy' and get that nailed down soon.

Thanks guys!
I read the first post and saw "Base camp" and figured it was a camping excursion/event. I'm totally good with that. I can also get a motel if that is what people are more interested in. I'm pretty easy about the whole deal.
I'm not really all that concerned about the camping part and if sites cost or not. J just thought it would be fun to get off the beaten path for a while. I was a "mountain boy" growing up and have lived in the flatlands for over 35 years now. The last time I got to camp out in the mountains was 1985. My kids totally missed out on the fun.
Don't go to much fuss over gettign a bunch of information. I'm very adaptable and can sleep in my GV if I need to.

I'm staying at the Western Motel at Gunnison.

Hi Guys,
In vehicle communication? What will everyone have and use on the trip. I do not have a CB, but I do have 4 of the upper end Motorola GRMS/FRS radios.
Rob
This trip inspired me to install a CB. I have wheeled with a handheld CB in the past but found it to be a pain at times so I ordered a Cobra 75 WX ST since it does not take up much space in the Tracker. The entire radio is in the mic. I also added a Firestik fiberglass antenna, safety flag and a base spring in the drivers side. I installed a connector box to the motorhome so I can move the CB radio to the motorhome when traveling cross country. I have GMRS handheld radios too if needed so I will have all bases covered.

I'd like to come out and spend a day or two learning more about off-roading with my Tracker.
It's bone stock and kinda nice so I'm not keen on trails that might cause damage- and I've never been off-road in anything.
If all went well I'll build something up for next year. If this would be a good opportunity for me that'd be great - but by the same token I don't want to be in the way.
So...should I consider this event or is it best that I keep to myself?
-
Yes, I would consider it. I imagine on some days the trails will be relatively easy-mainly dirt and gravel roads. You can always bypass the tougher trails.
FYI, the Samurai I am taking is not really "built" per se. It has a little bit of lift (3" Deaver springs, 30" AT tires) and some gear reduction (5:1 case), but it is stock otherwise. No lockers etc.

Right. By comparison mine is a grocery cart ::)
I'm close enough - Denver - that I could pick the days based on what trails are being done...so that would work. But I have to believe this isn't an event planned around mild trails that focus on a nice picnic lunch. If people are coming all this way they want a challenge. All this is supposition. I'm hoping for a reply from an organizer who can advise one way or another.
-
So...should I consider this event or is it best that I keep to myself?
I would definitely consider it. The first time we were in the Taylor Park Reservoir our Tracker was bone stock with street tires. On some of the rougher trails we did scrape the bottom of the Tracker but there was no damage but on most of the trails, you will have no problem. That year it got us hooked on offroading.
1. The top of Tin Cup Pass in a bone stock Tracker in 2004
2. The top of Tin Cup Pass in 2010
I am sure the the group will often split into different groups depending on choice of trails for the day. I have done many of the trails and can advise you on many enjoyable day trip trails in the area even if you choose to go by yourself.
-
Now we're getting somewhere :-)
Looks like a good time on a fairly flat trail which is what I'd need ::)

I'm sure Eric will chime in here, but he does an excellent job of choosing trails, routes, and obstacles that can either be completed or bypassed by any members of the group. I can't speak for all of the trails, but based on descriptions that I have read during my online research, I'm certain that your Tracker can handle most, if not all, of the trip. If you choose to spend even a day or two out on the trail, you won't regret it!

Don't underestimate your Sidekick. It is quite capable in stock form.
Despite an 800-mile drive to get there, I'm not looking for a Moab-like challenge. If I was, I would take a more built up Samurai. I'll be running the "mild" trails, bypassing the rock gardens, and enjoying a nice picnic lunch. 8)
The event organizer is also driving a stockish Suzuki Equator pickup, so it's not like he is driving some offroad buggy.

So...should I consider this event or is it best that I keep to myself?
Plus they are overlooking the fact that there are usually (90% of the time), a spare seat available if you want to ride along and see what your Suzuki will be capable of in a few years (after the modification bug bites) >:D 8)

Ok - I'm in!
I sent my email address via PM.

Good point. I am driving alone and would welcome a rider.

I'm ok with that

Good job guys on getting another victi... I mean participant signed on. :) We will mostly be doing medium trail rides with optional hard spots for wheeling. For example, Tin Cup is one of the loops I plan on doing and you can see the pictures of it's difficulty that was just posted. Remember this is adventure wheeling not obsticle wheeling so if something is too hard, just go around. I'm shooting for a nice balance and I think we'll get that. Also, we don't all have to go together every day. If a "hard core" group wants to break off and go out, that's cool... Same for those that want to go 'easier'...
-Eric

Oh Crap! What have I gotten myself in to?
I've booked a space at Colorado Dream Ranch. I have an '84 Winnebago Elandan that I've been working on for some time but have never taken out for a real run. So...on top of my first off road experience this will be my first outing with the Winnie.
I guess I might as well have all my adventures at once huh? ::)
-
That's the spirit.
-
I am not a fan of heights or trail damage. My Samurai, which was built pretty well when I got it, is way more vehicle than I know what to do with. I am looking forward to this trip as a learning experience and there will be a lot of wheeling experience to take advantage of. Fun is the name of the game so you can't go wrong showing up and meeting some people at these kind of events. Even if you go on a run by yourself at least you can file a flight plan with someone in case you have trouble.
See you there ;D :D
-
I think it'll be a great time...and as you said - a terrific learning experience.
Or
A very popular You Tube Video :o
BTW - I've been noodling around the net looking at GPS apps for my Android phone.
Anybody have a recommendation?
I know I'm getting waaay ahead of myself but they seem helpful and it'd take a few days to get used to the interface.
-
Well I finished jobs I had to do to get my Tracker ready. I added a Safari Snorkel that I had laying around for years. Today, I repacked the front wheel bearings. We do a lot of deep mud and water at Rausch Creek Offroad Park here in PA and I have found if water gets into the bearings they can pit or rust so I alway repack them before flat towing to the west. So I am down to packing tools and the motorhome. I am getting excited to meet everyone and do more wheeling in the Rockies. I guess I will be the first one on the road due to the distance. I am planning to leave on Tuesday the 7th or on Wednesday the 8th since I have a few days of Interstate driving ahead of me. If any of you are planning to be in Colorado early, please let me know via phone or email since I will probably be in Colorado by Friday. We could do some wheeling east of Gunnison for a few days.

I've been doing quite a bit of reading about the area. One thing that's consistent is the advice that cell service is spotty at best. I, for one, am on Sprint. When up in the Black Hills last month I had zero signal most of the time.
Is there a back-up plan for communication in the event we have no signal?
-
A lot of people will have CBs in thier rigs. I don't have one, but I have 4 of the Motorola GMRS radios with the 35mile range. Of course they never get that, but they do have a decent range outdoors.
Looking forward to the trip. I just got back from a desert wheeling trip, but I love the high altitude!
Rob
-
I just bought a new CB for this trip; A radio shack mini cb. I hooked it up last night and was instantly connected to the local white-trash culture that (still!) use the CB radio as their primary form of electronic communication. It was like listening to a local version of the Jerry Springer show hosted by Unknown Hinson. ;D
-
Look at your local Craigslist. Often people are selling $5-15 handheld CBs. I have two handhelds that I could lend out but you would need to suppy the batteries. I added a CB to my Tracker for this trip but it was on my to-do list anyway.
I am leaving for Colorado in the morning. Only 1800 miles to go. ;D
-
I have a hand held CB...I'll bring it along.
-
Cell service is really spotty in the Gunnison area. Not bad around the towns, but a lot of up/downs and few towers. I'm not sure around the Taylor area. How about a general outlay of plans? I still don't know where everyone is camping, or a list of contacts. I will be staying at one of my houses there, so no camping for me.
-

I will have 2 handheld FRS/GMRS radios, one CB installed in my Samurai, a VHF/UHF handheld and mobile radios (my wife and I are KE7RKL and KE7SDG; anybody else a Ham?), and I have a 4 watt cell phone booster in my truck. It won't create cell service, but it does consistently add 2-3 bars to whatever is already available. I have been many places where nobody was able to get service, but inside of my truck had 1-2 bars.
Took my Samurai out on a local trail last weekend for the first time since I did all the work; it worked perfect. No problems, and the new 1.6's torque was a welcome addition on the steep hillclimbs. Putting it up on the lift on Wednesday for a re-torque of all of the suspension and engine parts and an inspection of all of the work I did; if no problems are found it goes onto the trailer along with all of my camping gear. We head out on Friday morning!
-
I have been out here for a couple of days in Alma and its super nice. Rained a lot last night and yesterday afternoon.
Good thing I came out here early it will hopefully give me time to get my rear brakes repaired (note to self make sure parking brake is completely off when flat towing!) Hope drums are OK, tires survived without any excessive wear.
No CB, Cell sucks, this connection is thru our friends internet. We will be here a couple more days hopefully my jets will arrive so I can rejet for the altitude.
Looking forward to seeing and meeting everyone and hopefully will be acclimated to the altitude by then.

I'm heading out Sat. Which carb are you running?
-
Weber/Solex 34 DG EC carb.

Might be a good idea for the first person into the Taylor area to post a conspicuous roadside sign somewhere (could be as simple as a paper plate attached to a bush). It could include a camp location or other pertinent information. I plan on being in the area Saturday night. Anybody going to be camping in that area before then?
-
I will be rolling in Sunday late morning/early afternoon and I should make the picnic.
-
I'm planning on leaving in the wee hours of Sunday morning so I can get there before the 2pm meeting/BBQ. I'm so excited about this trip!
Rob
-
Man, I am SO jealous! Wish I was joining you all. :(
-
I am not sure when we are going to make it down to the TPR area. But we should be able to meet you there Sat night. Maybe there is a bulletin board at the trading post.
The shop in Fairplay has my brakes fixed and I will pick it up tomorrow. My Jets are going to arrive Friday or Sat so I will be in Placer Valley/Alma area until then.
Today we had a great day bumming around in Breckinridge and taking a easy but very scenic loop back to our friends house.
Altitude in MN about 500' so the chance to acclimate to these altitudes is very good for us old flat landers.
I asked Eric to send out my cell number so feel free to call and leave a msg. I will respond ASAP.

Or it could be established that we meet at the Trading Post Cafe at 9 AM Monday Morning.
http://www.taylorparktradingpost.com/index.html (http://www.taylorparktradingpost.com/index.html)
But it looks to me like a lot of the trails are south and east of the Trading Post so some folks might not want to go out of their way.

I think we will have a better idea of what is happening after the BBQ on Sunday.
Camping gear is ready! I'm ready to spend a week in the mountains.

Right. All we have to do is hope cell phones work.
-
Anyone want to throw out a CB channel for use?
-
In the desert we use the day of the month as our CB channel. It makes it easy for everyone to remember,If they know the date.
-
I don't have a CB But I am hoping to find a fairly conspicuous camp site to the east or north of the reservoir. I don't have a CB so i won't be able to communicate that way. I will probably be headed to the TPR tomorrow, since my carb jet kit isn't going to make it to CO anytime soon (my fault). I will keep an eye out for Suzuki oriented people and try and find cell service.
FYI:
I have a 96 Dodge 4x4, silver, big front bumper, and a hard side camper on back. Sammy is white with 33" tires.

Well, I made it from PA to CO. Arrived in Leadville CO this evening. I am camping in the state park next to Turqoise Lake. Plan to be here tomorow night as well if anyone want to join me. First time using my cell phone as a modem. Pretty cool. After 3 days of hard driving tomorow will be a rest day.
-
I like the Trading Post idea on Monday, as I won't be rolling in until later on Sunday (I don't drop my kids off till 3 and then have a couple hours drive over). If I could get a shout out from someone Sunday night as to the what's what I would really appreciate it.

Hi Guys,
I won't be able to make it. Family issues will be keeping me at home this weekend and next week.
It makes me really sad, I had all of my stuff ready to go and now I'm going to miss out on this great trip.
Have fun guys, lift a cold one for me.

We'll see you by about 7:00

We were thinking it would be a good idea to have Sundays picnic at 2 inTaylor Park area because there is major road construction on the road to Taylor Park with over 1/2 hour waits for escort truck. With the 2 picnicking probably ending 4ish then trying to get to the camping area and many then trying to find campsites may make things difficult. The drive from Gunnison is an hour and 15 minutes without the construction., What do you guys think?

Made it into town. :)

My dad wasn't having too much fun between the rock gardens and the narrow trails/sheer drop offs. So, I hope to try a smoother set of trails tomorrow.

Hi there Jonny, what is this place?
-
Anyone tracking their gas mileage on the trip?
Nah, my speedometer/odometer is defunct. I only used about 5 gallons of gas after wheeling all day. Samurai with a stock 1.3, and a sometimes poorly running stock carb (loading up).

I don't have a mileage figure either but all day Monday from Taylor to Tin Cup to St. Elmo, up Hancock Pass - over to Alpine Tunnel then back through Tin Cup to Taylor - 3 gallons. Well - 2.98 .

Khodabear, I sent you an IM about your camper.

Can anyone put names to faces or vehicles in the pictures?

I should think that among all of us Colorado locals we could make it an annual event.

Did Schofield's Pass today along with some other trails. Talk about some scenic views! :o
Looking forward to the Colorado Adventure Run for 2013!

A little background for those who went to Alpine Tunnel from a friend...
I love that area over around the Alpine Tunnel. Our Jeep Club, Mile Hi Jeep Club did the restoration of the dispatch shack up at the tunnel and also has reset the last, complete water tank down at the end of tunnel gulch---started that, for the first time, in 1964 when they rebuilt the whole tank. The railroad had pulled up the track and just cut the steel bands holding the water tank together and let the slats drop to the ground---they were only interested in the steel to sell. Our club had the bands re-made and re-assembled the tank in 1964 and two times since have re-done those huge timbers 16X16 under the tower to support it. I have actually been in and have gone all the way to the East end of the tunnel back in 1991-----Glad you had a good time and glad that the Tracker did a good job.
Jerry
So I guess we have the Jeepers to thank for a lot of what we enjoyed!

Just now getting home and it was a great time. We ran Schofeild Pass/ Devils Punchbowl, went over to Marble, then Crystal City and back out. Ive been down to the Punchbowl before, but never dropped down in it and it did not disappoint. Was raining when we came out so that made it that much harder.

Just got home a few minutes ago; it's 3:00AM and I have been driving for the last 22 hours! I have around 2000 pictures from the trip; I will be sorting them and posting them to a photobucket account. I'll provide that link in the coming week or two, but here is my favorite picture from the trip (so far). It is a pic of Eric driving the Equator down Black Bear Pass into Telluride. It looks like we were driving right off of a cliff...

That is an awesome picture and I'm really sad I was not able to attend the trip like I planned. I can't wait to see more pictures of the trip.

I'll let people post their own names/vehicles...
I'm Matt (sewerzuk) in the black exo-caged Samurai, affectionately dubbed "Aileen" (or i-lean) during this trip.
It was its first trip out after some major work...perhaps a bump in spring rates and/or sway bars are in order.

...and here is the 1987 Samurai that I took out there. It's basically a leftover's build that I installed a bunch of old and well used parts on. The drivetrain/suspension mods are limited to a GRSII transfer gear set, 3" Deaver springs, dropped pitman and some 10+ yr old, 30" Firestone ATs. :o It performed very well out on the trails and I'm glad I took it out there, instead of a more built rig. The carb loaded up a little on the secondary, but it seems that once I went through all the Oklahoma formulated gas, it started to run much better.

I am so bummed about missing this. I had no idea this was going on or I would have been there. It's only a short 3-4 hour drive for me from Denver. I love the Taylor Park area. I had my '87 Sammi down there in July for a week and am going down again over labor day weekend. I'm totally bummed! George, keep your eyes open will ya'!
I'm looking for Samurai enthusiasts in the Denver metro area anyone. Anyone out there from this area? I don't do a lot of 'Heavy' four wheeling with my Sammi because it is stock but I'm sure having a ton of fun with it since I picked it up and got it going.
I'd sure be interested in finding people around here to ride with. Shoot me an email harpgeorge|removethispart|@gmail.com or I'll try to keep a closer eye on this site.
Please take a look at my 'Travels with Sammi' blog so you can see the type of four wheeling I've been doing and enjoy doing:
http://www.travelswithsammi.blogspot.com/ (http://www.travelswithsammi.blogspot.com/)
Like I said, I'll be in Taylor over the labor day weekend and then in Moab at the end of September.

Link up with Khodabear and Roy. They are both nearby and drive stock Sidekicks.

JR,
I see that you have all the parts in place to lower the windshield on this Sami. Do you ever lower it? I'm trying to get a rough idea of what parts I want to have when I get a Sami and what parts are going to be a waste of time.

Thanks for the email addresses. It sounds like both of you guys have much newer outfits than my $400 '87. I may not be able to keep up with you 'fuel injection' guys.
Although she does a pretty good job considering she's 100% stock except for the paint job my daughter did for me for father's day.
Here are a couple photos of her. One all shined up in the driveway. One on top of Cumberland pass outside of Taylor Park and one on Slaughterhouse trail down at Taylor Park.
Maybe we need to get together for a 'not-to-agressive' ride before the snow moves in. What do you think?

Rob
Rob, yes I sure do lower it. It all depends on the weather of course; Colorado was a little too cool and rainy.
I really like it folded down on slower traiils and I've driven it around small town Oklahoma with it down. Above, 30 mph...the appeal starts to dwindle. Too much wind.
You could always unbolt it first to see how you like it.
-
Thanks Jonny. I rember riding in our old jeeps with it folded down. As a kid, I always wanted it down so we could feel all of the wind; my parents, not so much.
Rob
-
FWIW, I folded it down at the 2011 Moab Zukfari (different Samurai).
I really don't trust the flimsy buckle strap that comes with the kit though and I use a rachet strap to hold the windshield down (anchored at the grab bar and bumper). That way it doesn't bounce on the hood and there isn't any chance of the buckle breaking and/or the hood or windshield to come flying up.
-
I've driven my Jeep with the windshield down at speeds from 1-65 mph. It is windy but pleasant up to about 40 mph. Above that is it tolerable if you like wind. I've taken on the expressway for a couple of miles.
-
There are way too many bugs/hoppers in Nebraska to fold it for anything more than 15-20mph. Still, off-road in Moab it would be awesome to have it folded and the doors off. Just need a safary type of top to keep the sun off of you.

They are all from different trails and towns; we did Tin Cup Pass, St. Elmo, Mt. Antero, Italian Creek, Black Bear Pass from Ouray to Telluride, and Schoffield Pass including the towns of Gothic, Marble, and Crystal City.
The pic you are asking about is actually a power station for a mining camp. It sits on top of Bridal Veil Falls, above Telluride.

No flats, that I know of, but my BFG all-terrains took a beating. Other tires did better... I think the KM2s or Kevlars didn't shown any extra wear.
-Eric
-
No problems with my tires either. I actually have some well-seasoned, 14-yr-old, 30" Firestone AT tires on the Samurai I took out there and they did just fine.
-
Did anyone get stuck and require recovery of any sort on the trip?
-
Not to my knowledge. I almost got to winch Matt's father up some rocks but then Matt figured out that his front hub was not locking and fixed it.
Hello all. I am still on the road since that week. Got two more weeks till I got to be home. This was the first time I got wifi since then.
-
Where have you been?
-
Where have you been?
I left the Taylor Park Reservoir area then went to Silverton Colorado area. I spent two weeks doing trails there. I did the Black Bear trail, Imogene trail, Engineer trail and nearly every trail in the area. I found a few trails I have never done before even though I go there nearly every year. Then I picked up Vonnie at the Durango airport Sept. 3. We then headed up to Colorado National Monument, Dinosaur National Monument, Flaming Gorge National Monument, Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Devils Tower National Monument and then to the Black Hills of South Dakota and currently in Custer State Park. We might stay until Monday when they do their buffalo roundup. We then will be heading back to Pennsylvania after I have been on the road for two months. It is sure fun being retired.
First Picture: Black Bear Road
Second Picture: Poughkeepsie Gulch after I went up a wall and started sliding sideway even with both lockers on. Of course pictures don't show how steep it was. To be safe I winched up about 2 feet and was back on good traction.
Silverton/Ouray would be my vote for a Suzuki gathering for next year. This link would give you a good idea of the trails in the area.

Two very enthusiastic thumbs up! You sir, are living the retired life that I dream of!

Two more thumbs!
I would be interested in meeting at the Silverton area next year as well.
-
I would be down for that as well. I haven't been to Silverton since I was a little boy, more than 40 years ago.

Anyone want to throw out some dates for 2013? Do we want to shoot for August again or earlier in the summer?
-
Multiple dates woudl be fine with me. Next year looks so much better for me to do some wheeling.
