front locker questions
« on: January 30, 2006, 01:36:27 PM »
Can I use a  front 26 spline carrier and install a lockrite, or do I have to get a Sammy rear carrier and have it machined to accept the right axle? I'm going to a steel front housing/3rd member and Hagans widening and I figure while it's apart I might as well lock it up. I guess in a nut shell what i'm asking is do I have to get a sammy carrier or not?

    Thanks,
     Kevin

I thought with the smaller front diff, you use a Sammy
locker, but the Tracker 26 spline diff has only 2
cross pins, the rear Sammy has 4 I thought it was
a strength issue.

I haven't installed one of these, but I was thinking
about it

I don't think they actually sell a front lockrite for the kick but since you use your own sidegears does it matter? ???

The lockrite locker that u use is for a Sammy rear diff so you need the carrier and the sidegears. The sammy carrier does have a 4 pin setup and is stronger. To machine the carrier can be done on a lathe in a couple of minutes.

what i did on my sammy (although it may differ from a sidekick)was weld the rear spider gears and left the front open, on my Toyota axels.  I know that there are lockrights for kicks at RRO

http://www.rocky-road.com/kickdrive.html

the link doesnt work but if you just type it in the adress bar it will come up and then just scroll down to the lockrights.

How about the Trailtough Quality I've heard some good and bad. I am seriously thinking of using the trailtough locker. They said that it was all new and not part sammy/kick mix.

It's still a Lockrite... just in a modified carrier.. I wouldn't see a problem with it.. I am thinking about this locker too.. not a bad price.

I had a talk with Hawk this morning and he mentioned something I forgot. If you do the samurai center section carrier with the locker and the samurai side gears with 5.12 gears you will also need a diff can to keep the cross pins in. the 5.83 gears are wider and partially cover the pins thus keeping them from flying out.  Hawk also can machine the samurai carrier for you if you have one or he has them.

so the Trail tought locker is just a normal lockright with a machined sammy carrier for 300 bucks.  not bad if you can't find some one with a lathe.

Stu, The trailtough locker is not a sammy carrier but a new designed carrier for this application.
