4 door front bumper mounting?
« on: February 04, 2005, 03:55:13 AM »
Ok I did a search and found info on mounting a bumper to a 2 door but looking at the front of my 4 door its totally different. Anyone got any pics or suggestions before I start on this?

They're different???

Hmm, I have had the "bumper cover" off my 4-door, I guess, but I can't recall any differences.

Not sure what exactly you are looking for..

but on my 4 door the original front inner bumper, and the brackets for the calmini winch bumper mounted here:

With those lower brackets looking sort of like this (sorry, best pic I have)

That's funny!  "3 Door".  Is that what I would call a 2-door tin-top?  Or just a regular 2-Door?

OK for you BOB, it's a '93 factory 2 door tin top (with a factory bucket dash  ;D)

Technically it is a 3 door really.....

So the Calmini bumper bolts to the factory 4 holes!  :o :o

Those are some pretty tiny bolts to be winching against!

I am building a bumper to hold my winch and was looking for something more stout than factory. Those bolts are fine for a thin stock bumper in a collision but when winching its not what I would call confidence inspiring.

If your doing a custom bumper I'd be cutting the front body mount off the frame then cutting some 3/8 or 1/2" plate to the shape of the frame  and tapping some 3/8 bolt holes in it as bumper mounting points and welding it on and then weld the body mount back on top of it.

Kind similar to what I done in the pic above but with the 2 door I had to work to the inside of the frame.

Chet,
Although mines a 2Dr have a look at my pix here http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/mudfkrs/album?.dir=1ac4 it might give you some ideas before you start.

As you'll see it  started out with no winch, mounted a winch on it, then finally remounted it and got it to where I was finally happy with it.

It's not a 2 dr 4dr thing it is a early model / late model thing.   My 94 4dr has the later style mounts.

I've got a 2 dr with the late mounts (Narrow) and a 4 dr with the early mounts (Wide)..    And I've got a 1998 with one of Each...  Bought crashed and lacked a good spare late model mount.

Its a pretty scary thought, I had my winch bumper custom made. New mountings are welded to the front of the chassis. Theres a total of 6 M12 bolts holding the bumper on.

Yeah, a lot of people weld the Calmini winch bumper mount brackets to the frame where they go.
