Coolant leak? Common on tracker?
« on: November 28, 2004, 04:26:10 AM »
I got into my tracker the other day, and couldn't help but notice a streak of fluid behind it on my drive way. I looked closer and it was green, coolant.

I checked under the hood to see that the resevoir tank was empty. I filled it up, by the end of the day leaving work a nice puddle was under the car again?

I checked my rad to see if there was any coolant missing, and it was fine. It just seems that the res. tank empty's out. I checked all over and couldn't find a hole, or leaky hose of any sort.

Does anyone know what MAY be the problem? Do trackers have this common issue? My next door neighbour said it may be my water pump?? Im not sure what to think?

Hoping you guys can help.

Thanks again.

It's the 1.6L 4x4
Puddle is in front slightly more over to the driver side, and the milage is at 206,000 km

Sorry, should have mentioned that.
Thx.

Im thinking it also may be time for a timing belt and waterpump change? Is it like evry other car? roughly every 100,000km change.

Drivers side = left side ??

Coolant tank on that side, check
the small hose from it.

~ center would be water pump,
there are weep holes, look for green
coolant stains or sediment in those,
if that is the case, change the timing
belt and all hoses while you have the
coolant out and the cover off

Good Luck

I had a leak just recently. At first I thought it was the cap as there was coolant around it. The plastic header tank on the radiator had a 4" split under the foam that is on it to stop air travelling over the top and not through the radiator. Actually that reminds me I should add some more as the bodylift creates a big gap again so it isn't working as good as it should.

Any car with 200k+ miles on it could have a coolant problem.

I had a heater hose leaking at the heater pipe underneath the intake manifold; very difficult to see.

Look under the hood while it's running and see if  you can see the leak.  If not, let the engine come up to operating temp and then shut it off and look again.

When my car was 6 months old I had a major leak. It dumped all its coolant out because the bolt holding the metal water pipe into the rear of the water pump had fallen out.

You guys are great. thanks for all the advice. I'll have to keep checking and see where it could be coming from. I'll be more thorough in my search. It could be something as small as a hose, hopefully.

Ya, driver side left side. I checked the bay just before sun down, and it seems to be on some parts in my motor, right under the res. tank. Motor mount, driver side, and it proceeds to leak to the floor.

Like I said I'll do a more thorough check, and hopefully it's a small prob.

Checked my rad today, and it was bone dry!! I had to fill her up with a collant/water mix. I have yet to drive it but it doesn't look good ???

So it's basically leaking coolant from somewhere, hopefully not eating it, which would lead me to believe head gasket?

I think Wild was probably onto this one. It's probably the tank or the hose. If you aren't down on coolant when you check the radiator, those are the logical places to look.

A head gasket doesn't usually leak
outside of the engine, but if the radiator
is low, there is a coolant hose leaking
someplace, I would just dig into it and
replace the upper and both sections of
the lower main hoses, and replace the
heater hoses as well

I didn't ever find out if you have a 16V
engine or an 8V engine, the 16V also
has a heater hose on the back of the
head, and could be squirting to the left
side of the engine

Hoses are cheep compaired to a blown
head gasket, or worse, don't let it get
to the uhh ohh stage

when your trying to find the leak ... pull the theromstat first, and then start it up. At least then you'll KNOW the coolant is flowing around (as opposed to just sitting in the block till warm enuf).

I agree it sounds like a hose is leaking.

Thanks again all.

I will be taking her to my mech. tomorrow to hopefully find out it's a leaky hose.

You guys have been great help, especially Wild.

Thx again, and I'll keep you posted.
