I'm new to the forum, just picked up a 1993 Tracker, 1.6 8V, 5 spd with 170,000 miles.

I'm getting a vibration at 2800-3000rpm, in most gears, doesn't matter what spped I'm going.  Is there a "common" problem(s) with a Sidekick/Tracker that this could be?

What type of oil pressure gauge can I hook up to the oil pressure sensor to get accurate reading?

Finally, what are good compression test reading for the 1.6 8V?

anywhere from 170psi to 190psi should be good...mine has 170psi on on 4 cylinders and it runs pretty strong with stock gears and 31s.

Were are you feeling this vibration? Is it from the motor, wheels, etc.?

Thanks for the compression info.

Vibration feels like motor or tranny, because it's rpm not speed dependent I'm assuming wheel and driveshaft balance is a factor.  Because it's a narrow rpm range and clears up by 3100 rpm I'm assuming it's not a miss.

You meant "is NOT a factor", right?

Probably not a miss, but keep it in the back of your mind.  It's most likely a resonance with the exhaust.  Get a good glove on and feel the exhaust vs. the frame nearby while someone revs it into range.  Hopefully you'll be able to feel it.  If not, that still doesn't prove much as the motor's not under any load.  But if so, it might head you in the right direction.

Does it shake the same if you're just sitting in the driveway not in gear, or does it only do it while driving, in gear?

In netural there is no vibration, only in gear when driving.  Feel it more in 3rd, 4th and 5th, when cruising under light load. 

Because it happen at the same rpm and different speeds, I'm assuming they are not a factor, could be wrong.

In netural I don't feel any notable vibration in the exhaust.  Shake it and I don't hear anything loose either.

You could check the driver's side engine mount, and the main tranny/tcase mount.  Maybe they have movement in them that causes the vibration.

The tracker isn't a green one is it?  I owned one for a few years that i spent forever looking for the cause of a vibration, and could never find it.  It would happen while driving at a certain speed though.

How bad is it?  Does the car feel like it's out of control or anything?

No it's Blue  :)

It's noticeable, but not a control issue like a front tires out of balance or loose tie rod.  I'll check to mounts for play tomorrow.

what about a worn drive shaft yoke?  Maybe get underneath and twist the drive shaft back and forth with hands and see if there is excessive slop.  Maybe grease the fittings while your there too.  Could do the same with the cv joints.

Waiting for a little better weather before crawling around and the next round of searching for the vibration.

On the oil pressure gauge question, what do I need to look for to make sure I get one that will read correctly with the 1.6 8V oil senor??

Looks like the tranny and transfer case mounts are shot, cracked and have tons of play.  Checked Napa and CarQuest, they don't have listings for them.  Where is a good source for replacement ones?

Hawk is a pretty good source of mounts. I had a miss going on the other day 2800-3100, but under no load and only 'till it warmed up. If you want to touch the exuast for vibrations a screw driver of other hand held metal object will work better than a glove. U joints generally will vibrate under acceleration and relax when coasting or decelerating. Worst case you could lift the rear and check with load by using the ebrake.

my tracker seems to vibrate too! not the whole car but the motor in general. the transfer case gear shifter vibrates a lot, my gf laughs all the time because it vibrates just like her uknow what. i dont know whats its from either. its not shifting back and forth all around all over the place, it just vibrates like it will numb your hand if you hold for too long uknow what i mean?
