I learned about Fram Filters the hard way. The first time I changed the oil in my VW Vanagon I used a Fram Filter. Started it up and knock, knock, knock. I called the dealer and the service manager started laughing. He said to buy anything but a Fram because they were garbage. I put a Mann Filter back on the Vanagon and luckily it was fine. I use a Purolator on the Tracker with Valvoline Oil.
This is also a good place to learn about filters:

Kinda sad too.  Fram once upon a time made one of the best filters going...........then along came big box mart and the falling prices.  QUality went out the door and price chopping was in!

NAPA is a good brand as is purolator.  You probably will never see those in a discount store thus there won't be an incentive to cut costs and giveup quality.

Watch what you buy at wally world.   Prices aren't the only thing getting cut!

Hey there everyone,

I pretty much read the entire oil filter study and I am shocked...I've been using Fram Oil filters for years... I had no idea they were so bad... I went out to my local auto store and bought the most expensive filter I could find which is the K&N Performance Gold Filter HP-1002.  I will install this filter on my next oil change in late December with some fresh Mobil 1 oil.

Thanks for the info people.

Schaeffers Sythetic Oil, Better than Mobil1
and comes with free oil analysis so you
can find out what's in the oil when you
change it, nice to know if things are
going south in the motor B4 it blows.

I once had a Cordoba........minus the Corinthian leather (sorry Ricardo).
Had a 360 2 bbl and a slightly worn front main bearing.
With a fram filter I got not only lifter tap, but also a few heavy thumps on initial startup.  I also used QUaker sludge, er state, long before equillon llc bought them out and moved it all to Texas.

Kept the oil, but moved to Purolator.  Lifter tap and crank knock cease.

Flash forward a few years.......still a mopar man.......now its a  92 spirit, 2.5  four banger (the one with the balance shafts).   Came with a Fram on there PH3614 was the number.  Had some cam knock until the temp gauge moved a bit and the head got warm.  Now I am using Havoline 5W30.  Kept the oil, moved to NAPA Gold filters, cam knock goes away.

Flash forward again.  This time still mopar man.....2000 Dak with the 4.7 v-8.  I drive home to Indiana pops does me a favor one day and changes the oil.  Puts a Fram on there.  I fire it up, using Mobil 1 now, and some brief lifter chatter.   I make sure he put 6 quarts in there, he did.  Look below, there is the radioactive orange container.  Borrowed his intrepid, 2.7 L vee six, fire it up, a bit of lifter chatter too (I'm using it to go to town to get a "real" filter for my truck.  I stop lift the hood, sure 'nuff.........fram filter.)  While at town, I grab not one, but two NAPA Gold filters, one for my rig, one for pops.  Kept the oil in both, change the filters, noise on startup gone.

Asyou can see, I've spanned about 16 years here and four different engine designs, one a pushrod v-8, the others modern OHC engines.  But the knock, chatter thing was the same and all had fram filter on there.  By getting rid of the Fram, I got rid of the knock.

Now about my old 727 torqueflight in that Cordoba  with the 2-3 shift flare....................... ;D

I just bought a purolator plus filter, but I still don't know what grade oil to put in the little beast.  I mean what grade of oil(10w 30, 10w 40, or 5w 30)?  I don't want to put the same grade that Suzuki says I should for a new rig.

Totally beside the point: I buried a humvee last night doing vehicle navigating training.   We had to be winched out by another humvee.   8)

I use Wal-mart 20w50 oil and Wal-mart filters on my Sammy.  Why?? Because my Sammy eats oil like crazy.  I go through about a quart every 300 miles or so.  My rings are most likely shot (head was replaced last year with a re-manufactured head, so the valve seals are ok), so I don't bother using the higher quality stuff in a half beat motor since it would be a waste of money.

Now, in my '01 Explorer, I run either Castrol Syntec, Mobil 1 or Valvoline Synthetic (whichever is on sale  ;D) and Motocraft filters.

Please forgive me.  I know there was a discussion about oil filters while ago.  I searched for it, but no luck. :-[
I need to know what oil I should use and who makes the best filter.  I put 53 miles a day on my little rig, and it currently has 90k miles on it.  I have been following sticker under the hood until now.
Also, I am taking a trip down to McGuire AFB/ Fort Dix (Nj) and will be there for 6 weeks.  Does anyone know any cool trails to explore while I am there?

Unlike some people I prefer using Genuine Suzuki Parts (GSP) You can pick them up at the dealership for $5.00 each or a case of 12 for $36.00 it's cheaper by the case they're a blue filter with GSP printed all over it in black. As for oil I am on AMSOIL 20/30 your choice of fluids to pump in your Zuki veins should be done to your choice and pocket book.

Last time I saw a Genuine Suzuki Part
oil filter the parts store wanted $29.00
for oil and $59.00 for air filters, I took
the generic part route as I can't see
spending that much on something I'm
going to get dirty and throw away. :P

Hey, I got a free Suzuki oil filter when I bought some new mud flaps last year.  The parts guy just gave it to me on the house.  That was down right decent of him.

The thing is I never used it because it is just cool to look at.  It's all white with the SUZUKI logo in navy blue and just under it says CANADA, INC.

It looks cool, I should snap a pic of it.  I have it sitting by my PC on one of my speakers.

The filter looks like it is of very good quality too, not like those crappy Frams I've been using up until now.

Jen-U-Eyenne Suzuki Factory Oil Filters?

Wow, didn't know you could get one of those.  Amazing the things I learn by browsing the forums.  Thanks for the info.
I think I'll stick to my regular 2500 mile oil and filter  (Napa Gold) changes to rescue my engine from the grasp of miles.

One thing to consider about synthetic. I does find any little place to leak.  A blended oil is best to use because at a certain point with a blend you get all the benifits of a synthetic for alot less $$$$.
